Obituary

Esther Haigh, age 93, of Aberdeen, and formerly of 375 Dakota Ave. S., Huron, died Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at Manor Care Nursing Home at Aberdeen. Her funeral service will be at 10:00 AM Monday, July 12, at Riverview United Methodist Church, 1640 Simmons Ave. SE, Huron, with Rev. Iva Laudermith officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home with the family present from 7:00-8:00 pm, or Monday morning prior to the service at the church. The family prefers memorials be directed to Riverview United Methodist Church. Esther Haigh was born Esther Lenore Werner on November 6, 1910, to Walter and Emelia (Engel) Werner at Friend, NE. At the age of five she moved to South Dakota with her family where she attended rural schools and graduated from Iroquois High School. She attended Northern Normal and Industrial School at Aberdeen where she received a teaching certificate in 1929. On February 14, 1934, Esther married Earl Myron Haigh at Huron. They farmed near Cavour until 1975 when they moved to an acreage south of Huron. Esther taught at several rural schools in the 1930s and 1940s. After her husbands death in 1997 Esther moved to Aberdeen. In 2003, she moved to Manor Care Nursing Home in Aberdeen where she lived until the time of her death. Over the years she was a Sunday School teacher, pianist for the church, loved music, gardening, and sewing. She is survived by 1 daughter, Carolyn (Robert) Terrill of Hot Springs; 2 sons, William (Patricia) Haigh of Aberdeen, and Ronald (Nancy) Haigh of Philip; 8 grandchildren, Julie (Matt) Beilby, Lori Terrill, Mark (Patty) Haigh, Pam (Bryan) Hedman, Lisa (Chris) Cleland, Sam Haigh, Seth Haigh, and Katie Haigh; 5 step-grandchildren, Kori (Donel) Lemler, Kris (Roger) Christenson, Phil (Crystal) Dwight, Janice (Brad) Meehan, and Jamie (Tony) Portra; 9 great-grandchildren; and 11 step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl on March 6, 1997; 2 brothers, Harold Werner, and Otto Werner; 1 sister-in-law, Catherine Werner; and 1 step great-grandson, Charles Bomar.
