Obituary

Elisabeth Dickson, age 96, devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of Huron, died peacefully at her home on Monday, December 21, 2009.

Her Burial Service will be 12:45 p.m., Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, with her memorial service at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at First Presbyterian Church in Huron.

Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. Monday, December 28, at Welter Funeral Home in Huron, with the family present from 5-7 p.m.; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Born March 8, 1913, to Jim and Bertha (VanArsdale) Miner, she attended Miner Country School and graduated from Huron High School and Huron College. Earning her teaching degree, Elisabeth first taught at the Anderson School in Pearl Creek Township, riding 4 miles on a horse named Snip, to get there. She later taught at the Miner School, before marrying Russel Dickson on December 22, 1935. They farmed south of Cavour and raised their three children.

Elisabeth joined the Presbyterian Church in Huron in 1927, and she holds one of the oldest and longest memberships with the church. Over the years, she served in a variety of roles at the church including: Sunday school teacher, Circle P.W. Chairman, Chairman of P.W., Elder, and Mission chairman. She was also a member of the Covenant Group. Elisabeth co-chaired many dinners and events at the church, and she continued her work with the church until the time of her death.

Elisabeth was a long-standing member of PEO and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Huron. Elisabeth was very active in the 4-H Program. Many will remember her as a special pink-lady volunteer at the Huron Hospital.

An avid gardener, Elisabeth was also an expert at baking cakes, picking asparagus, hosting out-of-state hunters, and upholstering. She was an ardent reader and dedicated card player until the time of her death.

Grateful for having shared in her life are her daughter, Virginia (Gary) Stunes; daughter-in-law, Donna Dickson; six grandchildren, Ken (Kerry) Dickson, Kurt (Jann) Dickson, Karen (Jeff) Benson, Linn (Stephanie) Dickson, Gina McMains; two sisters Dorothy Hurlbut and Helen Schmidt; 15 great-grandchildren; and many very special nieces and nephews.

She is preceeded in death by her parents; her husband, Russel Dickson; two sons, John and Jerry Dickson; two grandchildren, Darin and Amy Dickson; three brothers, Robert, James and Donald Miner; and one sister, Josephine Henderson.

Memorials may be made in Elisabeths name to the First Presbyterian Church of Huron or Hospice.
