Elena A. Neeman, age 96, of Huron, formerly of Wolsey, SD, died on Tuesday, December 27, 2011, at the SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron, SD. Her Funeral Service will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron, SD, with burial at the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron. Visitation will be from from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Tuesday. Elena A. Bartel, the daughter of John F. and Anna Charlotta (Kahre) Bartel, was born on August 3, 1915, in Wolsey, SD. She attended school in Wolsey. Elena married George A. Neeman on June 18, 1943, at her home in Wolsey, SD. They were married by Pastor Leyhe of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Wolsey, SD. The couple lived in Lennox, SD, for a short time before moving to Huron, SD, in 1944. Elena worked as a nurse's aide for the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron, SD, for 16 years. Elena was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Wolsey, SD, where she was confirmed and baptized, and the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron, SD. She loved to keep track of the latest news, weather, and family events on Calendars. Elena also kept a daily journal. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, and watching car racing and golf on the television. Elena's family and friends were her main priority in life, and she was known as the family historian. Elena's grandkids always enjoyed her oatmeal cookies, and G.G. dancing with them or playing the piano for them. Elena also loved reading her daily devotions and saying the Lord's Prayer with everyone who came to her home. If you visited Elena at her home very often, you would always leave with a hug and her saying, "I love you". Grateful for having shared in Elena's life are her children, Geraldine Dunn of Huron, SD, Ron (Marilyn) Neeman of Tulare, SD, and Ken (Pat) Neeman of Sioux Falls, SD; 9 grandchildren, Brian (Mary) and Robert Dunn, Ryan (Susan) and Sean (Shalene) Neeman, Dawn White, Jennifer (Juan) Sabalier, Matthew Neeman, Amanda (Mike) Buckley, and Timothy (Kandie) Redenius; 19 great-grandchildren, Carly, Abby, Connor, Jade, Coral, Amber, Kiersty, McKenna, Rain, Gavin, Cohen, Brenan, Antonio, Briana, Isabella, Nadia, Alejandro, McKayla, and Adrian; many foster grandchildren; brother, Elmer (Mary) Bartel of Wolsey, SD; sisters-in-law, Ann Bartel of Pierre, SD, and Norelle Russell of Huron, SD; and several nieces and nephews. Elena was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George in 1975; sister, Laura Lau; 4 brothers, Alfred, John, Martin, and Wilfred Bartel; sisters-in-law, Rose, Lillian, Joy, and Yvonne Bartel; and brothers-in-law, Bill Mead, and Walter Lau; son-in-law, Gene A. Dunn; and great-grandson, Liam.
