Eldon D. Schmeichel, age 85, of 559 9th St. SE, Huron, died Friday, January 4, 2008 at his home. His funeral service will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at Mount Olivet Mennonite Church with Rev. David Erdman officiating. Burial will be at Hutterthal Cemetery, rural Carpenter. Visitation will be Monday from 1:00 to 8:00 PM at the Welter Funeral Home with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM or one hour prior to the service at the church Tuesday morning. Eldon Dan Schmeichel was born on March 7, 1922, to D.D. and Mary (Hofer) Schmeichel at Lake Byron Township. He attended school in Lake Byron Township. On September 11, 1949, Eldon married Mary Jane Wipf at Freeman. They settled on a farm in Lake Byron Township where he lived until 2003 when he moved to Huron. Mary died March 7, 1997. On November 7, 2000, Eldon married Lila Lee Hofer at Huron. He was a member of Hutterthal Mennonite Church. His hobbies were tinkering with old tractors and salvage. He is survived by his wife, Lila Lee Hofer of Huron; one son, Gary (Julie) Schmeichel of Hitchcock; one sister, Margie Pullman of Wolsey; several brothers and sisters-in-law, Martha Schmeichel of Huron, Betty Gross of Freeman, SD, Herman and Inez Wipf of Freeman, SD, Judson Wolf of Cedar Rapids, IA, Susie and Rhieny Hoffman of Mountain Lake, MN, Naomi and Norm Braun of Albia, IA, Clarence and Rose Wipf of Huron, Esther Tschetter of Huron, and Cliff and Vi Tschetter of Mitchell; several nieces and nephews and his beloved pets Spotty and Girl. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; parents; one brother, Dan Schmeichel; two nephews, Jeraine Pullman and Raynie Pullman; and several brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe Pullman, Barbara Wipf, Jack Wipf, Ferd Gross, Katherine Wolf, Clarence Bush, Elma Bush, Milton Gross, and Jonas Tschetter.
