Elaine Kahre, age 90, of 50 7th St. SE, Huron, SD, and formerly of Wolsey, died Monday, October 27, 2008, at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home.

Her memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 30, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Wolsey. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 1-8 p.m. at the Welter Funeral Home with the family present from 6-8 p.m. and a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m.

Elaine Kahre was born Elaine Marie Christopherson on December 14, 1917, to Landy and Anna (Karnstron) Christopherson in Huron, SD.

She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran church in Wolsey, and was a life-long member of the church.

She graduated as valedictorian of her class from Wolsey High School in 1935. She then attended and graduated from Northwest College of Commerce in Huron. She worked a short time for Humphrey Drug Store where she was acquainted with former Vice-President Hubert Humphrey. Elaine worked in government offices in both Watertown and Mitchell.

On October 12, 1940, Elaine married Herbert Kahre in Iroquois, SD. They farmed north of Wolsey until retiring and moving to Wolsey in 1981.

She is survived by 1 daughter, Janice (Lyle) Babcock of Wolsey; 2 sons, Alan (Laraine) Kahre of Wolsey, and Daniel (Paulette) Kahre of Wolsey; 7 grandchildren, James (Sherry) Babcock, Rachelle (Jeff) Keltgen, Shauna (Joel) Kemnitz, Chad (Kristie) Kahre, Bret (Saren) Kahre, Scott Kahre, and Sara Kahre; 15 great grandchildren; 1 sister, Mary Alice Poppen of Oregon City, OR; and 1 brother-in-law, Edward (Genevieve) Kahre.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herbert on July 18, 1992; 1 granddaughter, Melissa Sprecher on November 11, 2005; 2 sisters, Burdette Whites and Clarice Rounds; 4 brothers, Marcel Christopherson, Wayne Christopherson, Keith Christopherson (infant), and Orville Christopherson (infant); 3 brothers-in-law, Eldon Whites, Wesley Rounds, and George Poppen; and 1 sister-in-law, Ruth Christopherson.
