Elaine Hershman, age 84, of 1818 Arizona Ave. SW, Huron, died Thursday, July 20, 2006, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. Her funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, July 22, at the Huron Christian Church, 1667 Frank Ave. SE, Huron, with Rev. Alan Wager officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call this Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Saturday afternoon. The family will be present from 7:00 to 8:00 PM this Friday evening at the funeral home with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM. Elaine Hershman was born Ella Elaine Barber on November 16, 1921, to Benjamin and Esther (Albin) Barber at Worthington, MN. When she was a young girl she moved with her parents to Huron where she attended school. On August 26, 1940, Elaine married Laurence L. Hershman at Sibley, IA. Elaine lived in Grand Rapids, MN, while her husband served overseas in the U.S. Army during World War II. After her husband was discharged from the service they moved to Huron in 1950, and Elaine has lived here since that time. Her husband, Laurence, died on October 24, 1982. Elaine was very active in the community and volunteered at the Huron Area Senior Center and the VFW Auxiliary. She was a member of the Huron Christian Church, Huron Area Senior Center, and the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, Bingo, knitting, and cooking. She is survived by 1 son, John B. (Mary) Hershman of Huron; 1 daughter, Sharon (William) Peterson of Forest Lake, MN; 3 grandchildren, Barry (Jayme) Hershman of Cavour, Eric Peterson of Forest Lake, MN, and Dawn (Jeff) Rumley of Lake City, MN; 2 great grandchildren, Madison Hershman and Dylan Rumley; and 1 sister, Lorraine Byerly of Huron. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Laurence; 1 grandson, Michael Hershman; 2 brothers, Roy Barber and Loren Barber; and 2 sisters, Violet Lukehart, and Eleanor Schaeffer.
