Elaine E. Buchanan, age 82, of 420 21st St. SW, Huron, SD, died on Friday, September 25, 2009, at her apartment in Stoneybrook Suites.
Her burial service will be at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, September 29, at Riverside Cemetery in Huron. Her Memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday morning, at First Presbyterian Church in Huron.
Visitation will be Monday, September 28, from 1-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with the family present from 6-8 p.m.; or Tuesday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.
Elaine E. Thomson, daughter of Malcolm and Helen (Elk) Thomson, was born on July 8, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois. She grew up in the Chicago area and received her Registered Nursing degree there. Elaine met her husband, Dr. David Buchanan of Huron, SD while he was in his junior year at the Illinois Medical School. Elaine was head nurse at the Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago, and Abbott Hospital in Minneapolis. They were married on August 30, 1952. The couple moved to Huron in 1955 where David started his medical practice with his father. Elaine then elected to stay home and raise her five children.
Elaine was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for 54 years, serving as an elder,
and Sunday School teacher, for a number of those years. Elaine was a member of the YWCA, serving on the board and as a benefactor for the Buchanan Family Memorial Home in Huron. Elaine continued as an avid advocate by supporting the Jan Manolis Family Safe House in Huron. She was a proud recipient of the Spirit of Dakota Award and the Christian Leadership Award. Elaine was also a member of the Red Hat Club and La Sertoma. Elaine enjoyed knitting, photography, reading and creative writing.
Grateful for having shared in her life are her two sons, David (Dawn) Buchanan, of Edina, MN, and Rob Buchanan, of Huron, SD; three daughters, Beth Buchanan, of Forestville, CA, Nancy (Ron) Kuehl of Loveland, CO, and Jean (Scott Tice) Buchanan, of Barronett, WI; five grandchildren, Lincoln Tice, Sara Buchanan, Reid Tice, David Kuehl, and Jamie Kuehl; and her sister Jean McFadden, of Loveland, CO.
