Edythe Alta Sheffner, 87, Huron died Monday, October 22, 2007 at Sanford Health USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Her funeral will be 11:00 am Friday, October 26 at the American Lutheran Church, Huron, with Rev. Steven Brandsrud officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 pm Friday at St. Pauls Lutheran Cemetery at Java, SD with Rev. Jeff Wallace. Visitation will be at Welter Funeral Home in Huron, Thursday from 1:00-8:00 pm. with the family present from 6-8 pm and one hour prior to the service at the church. Edythe Alta Jones was born July 4, 1920 at Survey, Nebraska to Guy H. and Maymie [Grant] Jones. She attended school at Survey where she graduated. She then attended nursing school at the Anaheim General Hospital and received her Nursing Degree. She married Claude Burt Burton Sheffner on February 19, 1940 at Los Angeles, CA and they lived in Anaheim where she was involved with nursing. In 1945 they moved to Hay Springs, NE where they owned and operated the Hay Springs Hospital. They returned to Anaheim in 1950 where Edythe was the charge nurse in the OB department of the hospital. She esp. liked young children and kids in this department. Then in March of 1982 they moved to Java, SD where they lived during retirement. Burt died April 24, 1994 and Edythe continued to live in Java until 1998 when she moved to Huron to be near some of her grandchildren. In 2004 she moved to Centreville, VA to be near her daughters and later moved to Sterling, CO to spend time with her brother, John. She then missed Huron and returned in 2006 where she has continued to live. Edythe was a member of the Garden Club and Bridge Club of Java and past member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Java. Edythes hobbies were rock collecting with her husband and they collected rocks from the Sand Hills in Nebraska and the Black Hills in South Dakota. She also loved to hunt and fish with her husband and they went on many trips. She also like rodeos, liked to play cards, esp. canasta, loved to cook, loved small children, and was a great seamstress and was always making formals for her daughters and granddaughters. Survivors include three daughters: Rebecca [Robert] Presgrave of Centreville, VA; Patricia Taffee and James Guinard of Imperial, CA; and Victoria [Dennis] Conrow of Chantilly, VA; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-granddaughter; 1 brother: John Jones of Sterling, CO; two sisters: Lela Schomer of Outer Banks, NC and Leola Parvin of Valentine, NE; and two sister-in-laws: Dorothy [Bob] Jaeger of Rushville, NE and Dorothy Jones of Valentine, NE. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; 3 brothers: Harvey, Jack, and Larry; and 1 infant sister.
