Edward George McAtee, age 90, of Winston-Salem, NC, and formerly of Huron, SD, died on Thursday, January 27, 2011, at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC.
His Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 3, 2011, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, with burial at St. Martin Cemetery in Huron, SD, and Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council.
His visitation, with the family present, will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 2, at Welter Funeral Home; or one hour prior to the Service at the church on Thursday.
Edward McAtee, the son of Earl T. and Rose (Hirsch) McAtee, was born on April 10, 1920, in Highmore, SD. He attended school and graduated from Highmore High School in 1938. Edward married Daisy Bent on February 23, 1941. After moving to Huron later that year he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII serving in Europe.
Edward was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant in April of 1946. Edward returned to Huron and engaged in several business ventures including the Zesto Drive-In from 1970-1978. He and Daisy relocated to North Carolina in 2006.
Edward was a member of both St. Martin Catholic Church and the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron, as well as becoming a member of the St. Leo Catholic Church in Winston-Salem, NC. He was also a member of the William-Reaves American Legion Post #7 in Huron.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife Daisy, of Winston Salem, NC; two sons, Edward M. McAtee and wife Linda, of Winston-Salem, NC; R. Patrick McAtee and wife Arlene, of Brick, NJ; two granddaughters Amy (Lou) Valente, Winston-Salem, NC and Erin (Patrick) Peterson, Charleston, SC; five great grandchildren, Elaina, Emmy, and Will Valente, and Rory and Teddy Peterson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Robert McAtee and one sister, Margaret Howard.
Memorials may be made in Edwards name to a charity of the donors choice.
