Obituary

Edward Kahre, age 93, of Wolsey, died Thursday, February 6, 2014, at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron. His funeral service will be 10:30 am Monday, February 10, 2014, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Wolsey with burial at St. John's Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be 6-8 pm Sunday, February 9, 2014, at Welter Funeral Home with a 7 pm prayer service; or Monday morning one hour prior to the service. August and Martha (Bartel) Kahre, welcomed their new son, Edward Lewis, on October 4, 1920, while they were still living in the grainery at their farm 6 miles north of Wolsey. Edward was baptized, confirmed, and a life time member of St. John Lutheran Church in Wolsey. After 8th grade Ed hired out as a farm laborer which took him to Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska. He married the love of his live, Genevieve Jungemann, on June 27, 1943, and they started and maintained a dairy farm for over 60 years. In June of 2011, they retired and moved into Wolsey. His grandson, Trent, and his wife Jenifer now live on the homestead. Ed loved hunting and never missed an opening day of pheasant season from the time he was 12until 2013. He shared his love of hunting deer, geese, and pheasant with his grandson Trent. Ed served in various offices at St. John Church, including trustee, cemetery board, elder, and congregational president. He also played bells for many years in the Gloria Dei Bell Choir. Ed was active in many different organizations including, Farmers Union, NFO, Beadle Co. Milk Producers, Beadle Co. Democrats, and served on the Beadle Co. ASCS Board. He was recognized by the Beadle Co. Planning Commission for his many years of service. Ed was a member of the Wolsey Lions Club and held various offices. He was awarded a 25 year plaque and was given the Melvin Jones Fellow Award. Ed also volunteeredat the Wolsey Senior Center. Grateful for having been able to share his long life are his 2 children, Tim Kahre of Lincoln, NE, and Val (Marlin) Kohlmeyer of Wolsey; his 4 grandchildren, Trent (Jenifer) Kahre of Wolsey, Genae (Paul) Gilbertson of MN, Clayton Kohlmeyer of Wolsey, and Melanie Kohlmeyer,of Sioux Falls; 2 great grandchildren, Tyler Kunze and Natalie Kunze of Sioux Falls; in-laws, Bert (Anita) Jungemann of Las Cruces NM,Verla Jungemann of Seward NE, Luther (Joyce) Jungemann of Osprey, FL,Quin (Joyce) Jungemann of Lyn Haven, FL, and Gloria (Jerrald) Zupfer of Westwood, NJ; many nieces and nephews. Ed was preceeded in death by his wife of 68 years, Gen in 2012; his son, Kevin; his parents; his siblings, Esther (Robert Jungemann)-Fred Krueger, Art and Gertrude Kahre, Herb and Elaine Kahre, Irvin and Violet Kahre, and a brother-in-law, Herb Jungemann.
