Obituary

Edna Schallenkamp, age 99, of Huron, SD, died Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home. Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday April 26, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with burial at St. Martin Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, April 25, from 1-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 6-7:30 p.m. and a Scripture Service at 7:30 p.m.; or Tuesday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Edna Schallenkamp was born Edna Emily Arch, daughter of Charles and Theresa (Dryhaus) Arch, on December 10, 1911, at Letcher, SD. She graduated from Letcher High School in 1929. Edna then attended and graduated with a 2-year secretarial degree from Nettleton College in Sioux Falls. From 1933-37 she was the personal executive secretary to Gov. Thomas Berry during his term in office. During this period of time Edna was proud to have ridden on the train along with President Franklin Roosevelt, and his entourage, when he visited South Dakota. In 1934, she was present at the Stratobowl in the Black Hills National Forest when the National Geographic Society launched the Explorer, a manned inflatable balloon/gondola capable of stratospheric flight. On July 20, 1941, Edna married Edward Schallenkamp in Baker, MT. Over the next several years Edna worked as a secretary in Rapid City, Pierre, Aberdeen, and Huron. The couple moved to Huron in 1952 where she worked as a secretary for the Bureau of Reclamation until her official retirement in 1977. Edna was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish (St. Martin); member of the Beadle County Democratic Party and also ran the Democratic headquarters during election years; and NARFE. In addition to the times that she could spend with her grandchildren, Edna enjoyed reading, playing cards, and traveling. She is survived by her 3 children, John (Loretta) Schallenkamp of Lakewood, CO, Mary Hughes of Rapid City, and Jane (John) McLaury of Huron; 6 grandchildren, Mark (Shelley) Hughes, Jennifer (Dr. Bill) Holec, Kathy (Dan) Roberts, Dr. John (Nicole) Schallenkamp, Ann McLaury, and Mike McLaury; 9 great grandchildren, Alexis Hughes, Sydney Hughes, Hayden Holec, Makinley Holec, Rachel Roberts, Miranda Roberts, Madeleine Schallenkamp, JD Schallenkamp, and Joshua Schallenkamp; 1 brother, Myril Arch of Pierre; 2 sisters, Mildred Petersen of Placerville, CA, and Patricia Jacobs of Pierre; numerous nieces and nephews. Edna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward on May 9, 1975; 1 son-in-law, Richard Hughes; 4 brothers, William (Kay) Arch, Dallas Arch, Edward Arch, and Arthur Arch; 2 sisters, Lorraine (Bill) Hawkins, and Violet Johnson; and brother-in-law, Earl Petersen.
