Edna Grace Myers, age 100, of 50 7th St. SE, Huron, died Wednesday, August 17, 2005, at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home. Her funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Sunday, August 21, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Richard Rinearson officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday afternoon and evening and Sunday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Sunday afternoon. The family will be present from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to donors choice. Edna Myers was born Edna Grace Smith on January 5, 1905, to William and Katie (North) Smith at Deerfield, Iowa. The family moved to a farm west of Huron in Dearborn Township in 1908. She attended grade school in Dearborn Township and graduated from Huron High School in 1923. She attended Huron College and graduated from Wessington Springs College with an education degree. Edna then taught school in Beadle County until her marriage to William Henry Hank Myers on December 20, 1932, at the Methodist Church in Huron. After their marriage they moved to a farm east of Virgil, and the following March they moved to a farm 11 miles south of Huron. Karlene, Margaret and Marcella were born there. The family then moved 9 miles south of Huron in 1937. Clarke, Arla and Delane were born there. The family moved mile west on the Alpena Road from Highway 37 in 1943. Bill was born on this farm. They lived there until the death of Hank on November 3, 1958. Edna and 3 children moved to a house 1 miles south of the Alpena Road for a short period of time. The next year Edna bought a house in Alpena where she lived for many years. Edna resumed teaching about 1955, teaching at Cain Creek Country School south of Huron; second grade at Alpena School; and Golden Shield Country School south of Miller, SD, retiring when she reached the age of 65. After retiring she did housekeeping for an elderly gentleman in Alpena for several years. Edna moved to Huron in 1973. In June of 1998 she became a resident of the Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket, and the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron on August 29, 1998. Edna made her own clothes beginning in the 7th grade including making her own patterns. She also made many clothes for her children. She was handy with a needle, doing quilting, knitting, tatting, crocheting, and embroidery work. She was an active member and officer of the Sanborn and Beadle County Extension Service, Huron Business and Professional Women, Huron Lioness, Retired Teachers, BCNU Extension Charter member, Red Hat Society, HAATC (Center for Independence), Huron Area Senior Center life member, RSVP, and the United Methodist Women. Throughout the years she has been a member of the Virgil United Methodist Church; teacher and superintendent of Sunday School at the Alpena Methodist Church (United Parish of Alpena); and a member of the Huron First United Methodist Church and church circles. Edna enjoyed traveling throughout all fifty states, plus Mexico, Europe, Asia, and Africa. She expanded her world by taking painting lessons and story writing lessons. She also liked to garden and do jigsaw and book puzzles. Her family was her greatest joy and she made many wonderful friends over the years. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hank on November 3, 1958; 2 sons, Clarke Myers in infancy, and Bill Myers on May 13, 1999; 1 daughter, Karlene Myers on March 12, 2000; 1 son-in-law, Earl Larsen on September 27, 2002; 1 great granddaughter, Shelby Larsen on August 17, 1996; 1 grandson, Brian Clarke Rains on June 27, 1974; 4 brothers, Charles Smith in infancy, Elmer (Mable) Smith, Milo (Eva) Smith, and Waldo (Georgia) Smith; and 2 sisters, Wilma (Robert) Peterson, and Marcella (Don) Smith.
