Edna Johannsen, age 93, of 1251 Arizona Ave. SW, Huron, died Monday, April 18, 2005, at the Huron Nursing Home. Her funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Friday, April 22, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Iroquois, with Pastor Kathy Hibbert officiating. Burial will be at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday afternoon after 3:30 PM and Thursday evening and Friday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Friday afternoon. There will be a Prayer Service at 8:00 PM Thursday evening at the funeral home with the family present from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Edna Johannsen was born Edna Freida Zell on April 27, 1911, to Robert and Susanna (Koser) Zell, at Almena, WI. She moved to South Dakota with her parents as a young girl to northern Floyd Township, Sanborn County, south of Cavour, and attended Zell Country School. Edna moved to San Francisco as a young lady and was employed as a maid for a family. She returned to South Dakota in the early 1940s. On October 27, 1943, Edna married Herman Johannsen at Immanuel Lutheran church, rural Iroquois. Edna and Herman farmed in Floyd Township, Sanborn County, for many years. In 1996, they moved to Sun Quest Village in Huron. She was a member of ALCW and Immanuel Lutheran Church, a Sunday School Superintendant for 17 years, and a 4-H leader for over 25 years. She enjoyed growing a large garden and canning, and won many awards at the South Dakota State Fair. She also enjoyed writing letters to her family and friends. She is survived by 1 daughter, Marlys (LeRoy) Larson of Vermillion; 2 sons, Donald (Sue) Johannsen of Miller, and Jim (Susan) Johannsen of Artesian; 7 grandchildren, Lonna Larson, Leslie Larson, Neil (Darcy) Johannsen, Marc Johannsen, Eric (Julie) Johannsen, Sara (Tim) Cutler, and Nick (Jill) Johannsen; 2 great grandchildren, Jayden Johannsen, and Jalee Johannsen; 2 step great grandchildren, Jordan Cutler, and Caleb Cutler; 2 sisters, Elsie (Alvin) Larson of Gresham, OR, and Veda Gahl of Beloit, WI; 1 sister-in-law, Pearl Zell of Huron; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman on April 30, 1997; 2 brothers, Albert Zell, and Melvin Zell, and 1 brother-in-law, Herbert Gahl.
