Edna Hawley, age 95, of Wessington Springs, died Monday, November 2, 2015 at Weskota Manor Nursing Home in Wessington Spring. Her funeral service will be 2:00 pm Saturday, November 7, 2015 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Wessington Springs with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be from 5-7 pm Friday, November 6, 2015 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Wessington Springs; or one hour prior to the service at the church. Welter Funeral Home in Huron has been entrusted with the arrangements. Edna May Christensen was born on May 11, 1920 in Jerald County, South Dakota, to Andrew M. and Inger (Riis) Christensen. She attended Johnson Country School in Chery Township. Edna graduated from Wessington Springs High School in 1938. She then attended Dakota Wesleyan University and received her Teaching Certificate. Edna taught at the rural Griffith School, at Willow Lake, and at the Salem Public Schools. In 1950 she returned to Wessington Springs and was employed at the Christensen Insurance Agency, National Bank of South Dakota, and by Dr. Roscoe Dean. She retired in 1990. Edna married Francis Hawley on March 10, 1957 at the Congregational Church in Wessington Springs. They lived on a farm in Dale Township for 44 years before moving to Hillcrest Heights in 2001. She was a member of Rebekah Lodge, Chery Club, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, and Rebecca Circle. Edna enjoyed crocheting afghans, making bread, writing letters, and planting flowers. Edna is survived by her brother, Dr. Robert (Linda) Christensen of Harrisburg; sisters-in-law, Julie Christensen of Lafayette, LA, and Carol Christensen of Custer, South Dakota; many nieces and nephews. Edna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Francis in 2006; three brothers, Jens (Lucile) Christensen, Paul Christensen, Eugene Christensen; and several nieces and nephews.
