Earl Huber, age 89, of Huron died Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron.
His funeral service will be 10:30 am Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at First United Methodist Church in Huron with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with military rites provided by the Huron Veteran's Council.
Visitation with family present will be 5-7 pm Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at Welter Funeral Home in Huron with a 6 pm prayer service; or one hour prior to the service at the church.
Earl Rayford Huber was born in Alexandria, SD on August 5, 1926 to Charles and Julia (Cunningham) Huber. He graduated from Alexandria High School in 1944.
Earl enlisted in the US Marine Corps on January 19, 1945. He served on the USS Honolulu, a light armored cruiser, in the Pacific Ocean during World War II. After being Honorably Discharged on August 15, 1946, he returned to South Dakota.
Earl married Velma Ambacher on October 1, 1948 in Alexandria. The couple lived in Huron, where Earl worked for Lawson Plumbing and Heating. He was proud to have been able to help install the ventilation system on the SDSU Field House in the early 1970's. Earl retired from Lawson's in the mid 70's. After retirement, he worked on Lyle Newman's farm.
Earl was an avid card and bingo player. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was always watching football. Earl spent many spring days driving the countryside, scouring the ditches for wild asparagus.
Earl was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Huron, the Huron Veteran's Council, a life member of the Tomczak-Bartels VFW Post 1776, a life member of the Marine Corps League-Detachment 746, William F. Reaves American Legion Post 7, and was a very active member of the HVC Honor Guard.
Grateful for having shared his life are his two sons, Ervin (Kerry) Huber, of Huron, SD and Vernon (Gail) Huber of Virginia Beach, VA; two daughters, Deborah (Larry) Sweany, of Watertown, SD, and Judy (fiancé, Richard Bryant) Toelle, of Pierre, SD; 11 grandchildren: Cory (Erika) Huber, Brenden, and Devan (Kayla) Huber, Stacy (Jeff) Dougherty, Mike (Janice) Sweany, Andy (Christina) Sweany, Val (Bo) Foley, Katie, Chris, and Sam Huber.; 11 great-grandchildren: Daynon, Mattie, Bryn, and Tyce Huber, Kaela and Robert Dougherty, Alexis, Zack, Ava, and Luella Sweany, Claire Foley; siblings, Janice Anderson of Mitchell, Jim Huber of Parker, SD; several nieces and nephews.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Velma in 2011; two sons and one daughter in infancy; one grandson, Toby Huber; one great grandson, Dominic Huber; one brother, Delton Huber; and one brother-in-law, Larry Anderson.
