Dwayne "Hummer" Petersen, age 85, of Huron, SD, died Monday, July 11, 2011, at Huron Regional Medical Center. His funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 15, at Riverview United Methodist Church with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 1-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 6-8 p.m.; or Friday morning at the church one hour prior to the service. Dwayne Petersen, son of Arthur and Freda (Ehrk) Petersen, was born on January 20, 1926, in rural Huron, SD. He grew up in Huron and attended Huron High School. On April 24, 1944 he entered the U.S. Army during World War II. He was honorably discharged on November 29, 1944. He returned to Huron and in 1947 Dwayne married Dorothy Hensen. They were married until 1969. Dwayne lived on a farm north of Huron and was employed for Armour & Co. for 37 years, retiring when the plant was closed. As a hobby, he sold and traded horses. He also made horse-drawn wagons. In 1971 Dwayne married Loretta Hafner Salmon. She died on September 11, 2006. He is survived by 9 sons, Nels (Susie) Petersen of Johnstown, CO, Robert (Betty) Petersen of North Platte, NE, Ronald (Jan) Petersen of Hampton, NE, Marsha Hanson of Huron, Gary (Marvy) Salmon of Gillette, WY, Gene Salmon of Gillette, WY, Jim Salmon of Huron, Robert Salmon of Hanson, ID, and Ronald (Francine) Salmon of Gillette, WY; 1 brother, Richard (Frances) Petersen of Derby, KS; 1 daughter-in-law, Patty Petersen of Conifer, CO; 20 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Loretta; 1 son, Steve Petersen; 1 sister and her husband, Maxine (Wallace "Windy") Krutzfeldt; and 1 son-in-law, Roger Hanson.
