Visitation with family present will be Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.; or Thursday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Duane Elgie Frank, son of Otto and Frieda (Koch) Frank, was born on September 9, 1937, at Huron, SD. He graduated from Huron High School in 1955. On March 9, 1956, Duane entered the U.S. Army where he was trained in telecommunications and was stationed at Darmstadt, Germany, with the 322nd Signal Corp. After suffering from a broken neck as a result of a car accident in Germany, he returned to Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, CO. While recovering he met the love of his life, Nancy Whites. Duane was honorably discharged on March 6, 1959. He returned to Huron and joined the Huron 153rd Engineering Battalion of the South Dakota Army National Guard for 3 years. On August 1, 1959, Duane married Nancy Whites in Huron. Duane was an entrepreneur from an early age, raising and selling potatoes as his first business that he had grown by the James River. After returning from the service he worked for Sears Roebuck in Huron for 6 years. In 1966 he established Duane's Furniture & Appliance store, and in 1969 he opened a satellite store in Highmore. During this time he became a manufacturer's representative for the South Dakota market for a carpet/pad mill located in Georgia. In 1987, Duane and Nancy sold the Highmore store and Nancy then managed the Huron store. In 1994, Deborah joined the family business as a partner. At that time Duane retired from road work. In 1995 they built a new store, Duane's Carpet Outlet, at its present location at 1265 Lincoln Ave. in Huron. In 1997, Duane sold the store to Deborah and he retired. Duane was then able to devote a great deal of time to his 2 granddaughters while looking forward to their jumping off the school bus and running up to greet "Grandpa". He was a lifelong member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron; life member of both the American Legion William Reaves Post #7 and VFW Forrest McMullen Post #1776; and the DAV (Disabled American Veterans). He spent many loving hours with family and friends. Duane is survived by his wife, Nancy of Huron; 1 daughter, Deborah (Matt) Busch of Huron; 2 granddaughters, Jenna Rausch, and Erika Rausch; step grandson, Tyler Busch; brother-in-law, Ken (Linda) Whites of Gillette, WY; 4 sisters-in-law, Marge Frank of Sioux Falls, Patty French of Rapid City, Lynda (Richard) Stevenson of Riverview, FL, and Jeanne (Doug) Ellyson of Zavalla, TX; many nieces and nephews.
