Doyle Sass, age 75, of 690 9th St. SW, Huron, SD, died Saturday, March 21, 2009, at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls.
His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 26, at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Lake Preston Cemetery with military rites by the Lake Preston American Legion Post.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 1-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 6-8; or Thursday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.
Doyle Edward Sass was born on July 12, 1933, to William H. and Dorothy M. (Stewart) Sass in rural Wessington, SD. While he was young he moved with his family to Huron. In 1949, he moved to Lake Preston where he worked in the family grocery store until the time of his military service.
On February 4, 1954, he entered the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged on February 3, 1956.
On June 5, 1954, Doyle and Marilyn Golay were married in Waynesville, MO. Marilyn died in 1960, and Doyle continued to live in Lake Preston until 1967 when he returned to Huron.
Following his military service Doyle worked as a truck driver for various companies. He also worked for the Amoco Gas Station on 3rd Street in Huron. Following his retirement he worked for the Huron city landfill.
He was a member of the Watson-Krauter American Legion Post #110 of Wessington. His family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, were his pride and joy. His interests included gardening, hunting, fishing, bird watching, and raising pheasants and exotic birds.
He is survived by 3 daughters, Peggy (Gerry) Sheridan of Crooks, SD, Rita (Mike) Beck of Huron, SD, and Pam (Brian) Keiser of Watertown, SD; 1 son, Rick (Dawn) Sass of Ft. Pierre, SD; 11 grandchildren, Jeremy (Lacey) Sheridan, Jason Sass, Scott (Jessica) Beck, Chad Beck, David Sass, Tara Sheridan, Krysia Reilly, Stephanie (Travis) Head, Kelly Reilly, and Ashley Keiser, and Christy (Hondo) Arpoika; 15 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Robert (Kathryn) Ranft of Aberdeen, SD; 1 sister, Betty Reilly of Huron; his partner for the past 35 years, Carolyn Kopejtka of Huron; and a very close cousin, Roger (Betty) Sass of Huron.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marilyn; and 1 brother-in-law, Earl Reilly.
