Douglas L. "Doug" Urban, age 79, of Huron, passed away Sunday, June 19, 2016 at SunQuest Healthcare Center after a short battle with cancer.
His funeral service will be at 10:30 am on Wednesday, June 22nd at First United Methodist Church with burial and military graveside honors by the Huron Veterans Council following at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7 pm on Tuesday at the Welter Funeral Home; or visitation one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
Doug was born July 26, 1936 in Huron, SD to George and Faye (Hines) Urban. He grew up in the Huron area, attending country schools and Huron High School. Doug enlisted in the US Army in 1956 and served primarily in Germany until his honorable discharge in 1959 when he returned to Huron.
Doug was united in marriage to Rona Mason-Geyer on June 4, 1960 and they settled in Huron where they raised their family and have lived since that time.
Doug worked at Al's Service for many years, before becoming a petroleum salesman for 35 years; a job that he was very dedicated and devoted to by serving his loyal customer base. After "retiring" he worked 12 more years at Peoples Transit.
Doug was a member of the James Valley Racing Association from 1963-1971, Huron Volunteer Fire Department, Huron Ambulance for 25 years, charter member of the Huron Eye Openers Lions Club since 1977, and a current member of the Antique Power Association. Doug's favorite hobbies were restoring antique tractors and auto racing. He also enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling.
Doug is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rona, Huron; two daughters, Kelly (Rock) Johnson, Huron, and Keena Wipf, Huron; two sons, Kory (Teresa) Urban, Deadwood, and Kale (Beth) Urban, Pierre; eight grandchildren, Mark Johnson, Huron, Todd Johnson, Huron, Devon Urban, Deadwood, Lane Urban, Deadwood, Lucas Wipf, Sioux Falls, Logan Wipf, Huron, Rebecca Urban, Pierre, Emily Urban, Pierre; one brother, George (Janice) Urban, Dade City, FL; two sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
