Douglas L. "Boogs" Tompkins, age 54, of Huron, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 29, 2015 at Huron Regional Medical Center after his courageous battle with brain cancer. His funeral service will be at 10:30 am on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at Mt. Olivet Church in Huron with the Rev. David Erdman officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 5 to 7 pm on Tuesday with a prayer service and time of sharing beginning at 7 pm at Welter Funeral Home; or one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Doug was born March 28, 1961 in Mitchell, SD to Marvin and Sidney (Hosmer) Tompkins. He moved with his family to Huron in 1964. He graduated from Huron High School in 1980 and then attended Mitchell Vo-Tech. Doug worked at Freedom Valu Center for several years until 1990 when he joined the family business at Marv's Appliance working alongside his parents and his Uncle Rod Tompkins until the time of his illness. Doug married Cindy Jackson 02-28-15 at their home in Huron, SD. Doug was best known for his beautiful, piercing blue eyes and contagious giggle. Doug lived life to the fullest and had an amazing attitude and outlook on life - even through his difficult battle with cancer. Doug had a heart of gold and didn't have an enemy in the world. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. Grateful in sharing his life are his wife; Cindy Tompkins of Huron; his mother Sidney (Cliff Wietgrefe) Tompkins of Huron; his father, Marvin (Krista) Tompkins of Huron; 2 brothers, Mike (Rhonda) Tompkins of St. Lawrence, SD and Dave (Doris) Tompkins of Huron; 2 sisters, Lori (Jeff) Gottbreht of Lincoln, NE and Lisa (Glenn) Overbay of Huron; and many nieces and nephews. Doug was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Burt & Mable Tompkins and maternal grandparents, Warren & Lois Hosmer.
