Obituary

Dorothy Y. Wada, age 86, of Huron, died Sunday, June 6, 2010, at Huron Regional Medical Center.

Her funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 10, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with burial at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, CA.

Visitation will be Wednesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church from 2-4 p.m. with family present and 6-8 p.m. with family present and a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m.; or Thursday morning one hour prior to the service.

A second funeral service will be held at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, CA, followed by burial at Rose Hills Cemetery.

Dorothy Yayoi Nakayama was born March 20, 1924 in Montebello, CA, the daughter of Mokuemon and Iye (Nakamura) Nakayama. She met her husband, Gabriel Wada, at the flower market while selling fresh flowers from the family farm. They married January 30, 1941 in Yuma, Arizona. Dorothy and Gabriel lived in Compton, CA, until Gabriel, Dorothy, and their son, Gabriel, Jr., were evacuated in 1942 to Tulare, CA and were later moved to a camp in Gila Rivers, AZ. After leaving the relocation camp, in 1944, she moved to Butte, MT, where her husband had been assigned to work. While in Butte she worked as a bookkeeper for the railroad. In 1947, they moved to Three Forks, MT where she worked over 25 years in retail, and retired in 1984. In 1990, she moved to Westminister, CA. In 1991, they moved to Williston, ND to be near her daughter and family. While residing in Williston she earned her GED when she was 72 and worked at Economart grocery store and JCPenney. In 2006, she moved to Huron, SD. While in Huron she worked for Walmart as a People Greeter from 2006 to present and was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church. Dorothy enjoyed knitting, embroidery, crocheting, gardening, attending her grandchildrens activities, and helping others when ever she could. She was a FHA chapter mother, a Cub Scout, a Girl Scout, and a 4-H Leader.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Shirley (Tom) Tietz of Huron, SD, and their children; Angela (Ryan) Lindley of Okinawa, Japan and their children Collyn, Alexa, and Akyra; Chris (Vecta) Tietz of Mandan, ND, and their children Trevin and Treys; Deanna (Matt) Monson of Fargo, ND, and their children Ayden and Damen; and Jessica Tietz of Boulder, CO; her granddaughters, Michele (Craig) Hedquist of Casper, WY and their children; Samson Hedquist and his son, Samuel; Braxton, Aryn, and Paul Hedquist; Kimara (Kayn) Bernard of Hakkaido, Japan and their son Kenny; her grandson, Jeff (Kathy) Wada of Phoenix, AZ; her sisters; Sachiyo Ruby Budo of Las Vegas, NV and Momoka Mary Inouye of California and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Gabriel on February 4, 1995; sisters Haruko Nakayama, Miyuki Grace Winn, Sayuri Lilly Kajimoto; brothers, Nobuyoshi, Motohiko George, Jimi, Takamatsu Dick, her son Gabriel Wada Jr., and great-granddaughter Madison Hedquist.
