D orothy Lucille Roberts Schmit, age 96, a lifetime resident of Huron, peacefully passed away on Friday, April 6, 2018 at Sunquest Healthcare Center in Huron surrounded by her family.

Her funeral service will be 11:00 AM Thursday April 12, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church in Huron, with burial at the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, Huron.

Visitation, with the family present will be from 5-7 PM on Wednesday, April 11, at the Welter Funeral Home; or one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Dorothy Lucille Roberts was born on December 9, 1921 to Lewis and Edna Muriel (Stuart) Roberts in Huron, SD.  She was next to the youngest of 8 children. Dorothy always made sure everyone knew she only had one brother, LaVern.  She attended school in Huron, graduating from Huron High School in January 1941.

After her graduation, Dorothy met Orvel Schmit.  They dated and eventually they were married on August 22, 1941 in Minnesota.  The couple moved to Huron later that year and have lived here ever since.

Dorothy was a lifetime member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary. Dorothy enjoyed playing cards and Bingo.  She also enjoyed watching television especially, "Perry Mason" and "Matlock".

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Orvel Schmit, of 76 years and 6 months. She is survived by four of her children, Leona (Bernard) Kowalke, Linda Schuetzele, Thomas (Cheryl) Schmit, and Cindy Gabert, 10 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.   She is also survived by many, many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Janet Marie Fearon, one granddaughter, Melanie Schmit, and son-in-law Donald Schueltzle. She was also preceded by her brother and sisters and their spouses, Vesta Roberta (William Needham) Roberts, Thelma May (Norman Detlef) Roberts, Evelyn Almyra (Marvin Welty) Roberts, Elva Nora (William Wigington) Roberts, Lillian Mabel (LeMoine Baker) Roberts, Darlyene June (Merle Johnson) Roberts, and her only brother, LaVern Arthur (Lucille) Roberts.
