Obituary

Dorothy Meier, 81, of Zim, MN, and formerly of the Broadland/Wolsey area, died Thursday, November 8, 2007, at Clayridge Assisted Living Center in Biwabik, MN. Mass of Christian burial will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 12, 2007, at Resurrection Catholic Church in Eveleth, MN, with Fr. Joel Hastings officiating. Visitation will be Monday afternoon one hour before the mass at the church in Eveleth. Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 14, at St. Martin Cemetery in Huron with Father Terry Anderson officiating. Local arrangements are under the direction of the Welter Funeral Home. On-line registry for the Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home in Eveleth, MN, at www.cron-sheehy.com Dorothy Meier was born Dorothy Bies on October 13, 1926, to Louis and Mamie (Harden) Bies in Yankton, SD. Dorothy grew up on a small farm in Broadland, SD, and graduated from Broadland High School in 1944. She served in the Army Cadet Corp, graduating from nursing school in Aberdeen, SD, in 1947. On July 18, 1947, Dorothy was united in marriage to Louis W. Meier in Huron. She owned and operated a caf in Wolsey, SD. Dorothy loved both the prairies of South Dakota and the northland and lakes of Minnesota. They moved with their family to the Iron Range in 1955 and Dorothy worked as an RN for the Virginia Regional Medical Center for many years. Dorothy was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church in Eveleth. She was an artist and loved doing intricate handwork in crewel, embroidering, quilting and created beautiful Christmas ornaments each year for all of her grandchildren. Dorothy gifted most of her grandchildren with hand made quilts for their graduations. She loved all animals and had a great knowledge of them. Dorothy fed and cared for many birds at her home in Zim. She took great pride in her yard, garden, flowers and her home. She is survived by her 3 children; Rodney (Susan) Meier of Babbitt, MN, Todd (Donna) Meier of Zim, MN, and Jerry (Bonnie) Meier of Embarrass, MN; 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Shirley (Bies) Codington of Perrysville, OH, and Beverly (Ford) Kolin of Lake Oswego, OR whom Dorothy was blessed to meet for the first time just two weeks before her death; and her special friend, Sassy. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louis Meier on February 23, 1994; 1 sister, Mary Jane (Bies) Marone; 2 brothers, Lawrence Ford, Jr. and Arthur Ford.
