Dorothy Baum, age 90, of Huron, SD, passed away at her home in rural Huron on Wednesday, January 4, 2012. Her Funeral Service will be 1:30 p.m., Saturday, January 7, 2012 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron, SD, with burial at the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron, SD. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday, January 6, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron, SD, with a prayer service to begin at 7:00 p.m. Friday night: or one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Dorothy Phillippi, the daughter of William F. and Marie Ellen (Romocky) Phillippi, was born on December 19, 1921 in Huron, SD. Dorothy attended school at St. Theresa Catholic School. Dorothy worked at various jobs after school, until she fell in love and married the love of her life, Fred Baum Jr. on October 19, 1940 in De Smet, SD. The Couple settled on the farm they started south of Huron. Dorothy jumped right into the role of being a farm wife and was blessed with four children. As Dorothy took on the roles of both housewife and mother, she had a calling to become a nurse. Dorothy went back to school and got her nursing degree. She then got a nursing job at St. John's Hospital. Dorothy loved to help others in her nursing job, while at the same time helping Fred with the farm and raising four children. Dorothy was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. Her faith was very important to her, and became part of the legacy she passed on to her children. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, watching her favorite show, "The Young and The Restless", and chocolate candy, especially Tootsie Rolls, shared nightly with her husband, Fred. Dorothy's family was very important to her, and she enjoyed spending time with them. Grateful for having shared in Dorothy's life are her husband of 71 years , Fred Baum Jr., of Huron, SD; son, Michael (Lola) Baum, of Brandon, SD; daughter, Carol (Paul) Kappler, of Huron, SD; 10 grandchildren, Lori Tandy, Andy Erickson, Travis Baum, Shelly Vanderhule, Shannon Baum, Shane Ringheimer, Nikki Nichols, Fred Baum, Amy Hofer, Josh Smidt, and Dannielle Kappler; 23 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Bernard Phillippi, of Huron, SD; 2 sisters, Marie (William) Smith, of Billings, MT, and Patricia (Leon) Miller, of Spearfish, SD; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and brothers and sisters in law. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; son, Fred Baum; daughter Patricia Smidt; grandson, Torrey; 2 brothers, Stan Phillippi Sr. and William Phillippi; and 3 sisters, Viola Curley, Esther Carlson, and Gertrude Munion.
