Obituary

Doris Reilly, age 88, of Huron, SD, died Thursday, July 12, 2012, at her home. Her body has been cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be sent directly to the Beadle County Humane Society, 5063 Dakota Ave. S, Huron, SD 57350. Doris Mary Reilly, daughter of Joe and Velma (Little) Reilly, was born on April 1, 1924, at rural Wolsey, SD. She attended a one-room country school through the 5th grade until her father was elected Beadle County Sheriff in November 1934, at which time the family moved into the sheriff's residence in Huron. She attended Huron public schools graduating from Huron High School in 1942. In the fall of 1942, Doris became a freshman at Huron College, graduating with honors with a major in English/Education in June 1946. She was awarded scholarships each year of her college education and also worked her way through college by working in the college library all 4 years of school and during summer school. Following graduation from college Doris spent the next 2 years doing home missionary work in the slums of Chicago, IL, and Kansas City, KS. Doris then began a 33-year teaching career in the small towns of Onida, Alpena, Bowdle, Wessington Springs, Bridgewater, and Highmore before finishing her teaching career in the Huron Public School System; 23 years at McKinley Elementary School and 2 years at Wilson Elementary School. Doris enjoyed traveling and spent 9 months of the year teaching and 3 months traveling, spending her summer months in Alaska, Hawaii, all over Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and other places near and far. She also enjoyed photography and took colored slides of her travels and used these to teach her pupils history and social studies. Ever a lover of animals, in 1995, she withdrew a substantial amount of her life savings and bought the building and 7 acres of land which is now the Beadle County Humane Society and has been an ongoing major financial contributor. That is her legacy to the needy animals of the Huron area. Doris has been a member of First United Methodist Church in Huron for nearly 70 years. She is survived by 2 nieces, Christine (Mike) Archer of Eagan, MN, and Marcia Reilly of St. Paul Park, MN; 2 nephews, Mark Reilly of St. Paul, MN, and Ross (Ramona) Cunningham of Moline, IL; 1 grandniece, Anna (Nick) Brack of Eagan, MN; and many close friends including Jill Minske of Huron, SD. She was preceded in death by her parents; and 2 sisters, Betty Reilly and Mavis (Ernest) Cunningham; and 1 brother, Wayne "Buck" (Anna) Reilly.
