Obituary

Doris Phillips, age 89, of Sioux Falls, and formerly of Wessington, died Saturday, July 23, 2005, at Sioux Valley Hospital at Sioux Falls. Her funeral service will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday, July 27, at the First Presbyterian Church at Wessington with Rev. Allen Sager officiating and Order of the Eastern Star Service by Oasis Chapter #148 of Tulare. Burial will be at the Wessington Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Wednesday morning. The family will be present from 7:00 to 8:30 PM this Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Doris Phillips was born Doris Beryl Peterson on September 21, 1915, to John and Maude (Stewart) Peterson at Wessington, SD. She grew up in the Wessington area where she attended grade school in Hulbert Township and graduated from Wessington High School in 1933. On June 20, 1936, Doris married Earl Phillips at Wessington. After their marriage they lived and farmed in rural Wessington. She also assisted her husband with the delivery of mail on the Star Route for 47 years. In November of 1987, 3 years after her husband died, Doris moved into Wessington. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Wessington and the church treasurer from 1968 to 1998. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #119 of Wessington, the secretary of the Wessington Chapter for 30 years, and a 50-year member. She was the Grand Warder of the Grand Chapter of South Dakota O.E.S. in 1959. Doris moved to Lyons, SD, in February of 1998, to the Hartford Leisure Living in 2003, and in June of 2005, to the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls. Her many interests included reading and writing letters. She is survived by 1 daughter, Marilyn (William) Siemonsma of Lyons, SD; 4 grandchildren, Jan (Scott) Matson of Volga, SD, Debra (Craig) Faber of Mountain Lake, MN, Paul (Heather) Siemonsma of Lyons, SD, and Earl Phillip Siemonsma of Lyons, SD; 6 great grandchildren, Andrew Siemonsma, Brandon Siemonsma, Elizabeth Matson, Rebekah Matson, Jae Faber, and Jon Faber. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl on April 2, 1984; 2 brothers, Stewart Peterson, and Wesley Peterson; and 1 sister, Leone Steiner of Anaheim, CA.
