Dorathy Jean Paul, age 86, of Huron, passed away on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron.

Her memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron, with burial of her cremated remains at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Dorathy Jean Spain, the daughter of Paul J. and Bernice (Parkhurst) Spain, was born on March 30, 1930 in Huron, SD. She attended school and graduated from Huron High School.  Dorathy worked as a waitress and for the nursing home for a number of years.

Dorathy married Edwin Rieck on May 27, 1949 in St. Cloud, MN.

She married Ken Paul on August 27, 1977 in Woonsocket, SD. The couple then moved to Litchfield, MN. After Ken's death, Dorathy moved back to Huron, SD.

Dorathy was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron. While living in Litchfield, MN, Dorathy served as church secretary for 12 years before retiring and was also president of the LWML for her church zone.  Dorathy was a member of the local Women's Auxiliary and served as president of the VFW Women's Auxiliary along with holding many other offices. Dorathy was a member of and drove for the Council on Aging, and also served as secretary for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

Dorathy enjoyed doing crafts, especially making angels.  Dorathy loved travelling and spending time with family and friends.  She loved to volunteer and was willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. Those who met Dorathy took a quick liking to her and formed a lasting friendship for years to come.

Grateful for having shared in Dorathy's life are her children: Richard (Kay) Spain of Sioux Falls, SD, Bonnie Rieck, James (Kerry) Rieck, and Debbie Rieck, all of Huron, SD, Maryanne (Ron) Mays of Glen Burnie, MD, and Paula Rieck of Phoenix, AZ; 12 grandchildren: Brenda Huber , Brad Spain, Kenneth Spain, Samantha Rieck, Nicole Gietzen, Marcus Reeves, Ben Rieck, Natasha Mays, Brian Rieck, Morgan Rieck, and Nathan Rieck; 16 great-grandchildren; her siblings: Violet (William) Zimlinghaus, Lake Hoptacong, NJ, James (Diannah) Spain, Sun City, CA, Norma (Merlin) Rieck, Mitchell, SD, Barbara (Robert) Boone, Sioux Falls, SD, Lloyd (Jean) Spain, Huron, SD, and  Ron (Janet) Spain, LaCrosse, WI; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorathy was preceded in death by her parents, Bernice and Paul; 2 husbands: Edwin Rieck in 1997 and Kenneth Paul in 2007; children: Donna Rieck in 1972, Paul Rieck in 2012 and Mary Lou Rieck and Douglas Rieck, both in infancy; grandson, Evan Rieck in 2007, great-granddaughter, Odessa Gietzen in 2015; and siblings: Robert and Don Spain, and Paul Spain Jr.
