Obituary

Donna M. Thompson, age 93, of Huron and formerly of rural Doland, died December 21, 2018 at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 AM on SATURDAY, December 29 at the Doland United Methodist Church under the direction of Reverend Harold Loewen.  Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Huron.  Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 PM on FRIDAY, December 28 at Welter Funeral Home in Huron with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00.

Donna Mae Anderson was born April 5, 1925 on a farm near Esmond to Engel and Marval (Johnson) Anderson.  She grew up in Cavour and Huron, graduating from Huron High School in 1942.  After attending the Northwest College of Commerce, she worked as a bookkeeper for the Moore and Colton Wholesale Grocery Company prior to starting work with Farmers and Merchants Bank in 1948.  Aside from breaks for raising children, she continued to work in various positions at the bank until 1966.

She was united in marriage to Harold O. Thompson June 21, 1953.  They lived on a farm near Doland with their son Scott and a daughter Ruth, and were married for 56 years prior to Harold's death in 2009.  Donna sang in the First United Methodist Church choir in Huron, was active in the National Federation of Music Clubs, the PEO, the Rebecca Lodge, and the United Methodist Church of Doland.   She was devoted to her children, served as a 4H leader, and supported them in their activities.  She had a beautiful voice, sang at countless weddings and funerals over the years, and was the founding director of the Doland Community Choir.

Donna is survived by her brother Kenneth of Denver Colorado, her son Scott (Pamela) Thompson of rural Doland, her daughter Ruth (Monte) Mason of Redfield, five grandchildren, Meridith (Jason) Biel of Wilmot, Charles (Amelia) Thompson of Blackhawk, Amelia Jo Thompson of Watertown, Jessica (Dan) Hansen of Brookings, and Stephanie (Miles) Morris of Britton.  She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, Alexander and Evelyn Biel, Elena and Hendryk Thompson, and Maya, Noah, Leah and Ian Hansen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Iris, and her brothers Dale and Ellis.  Her funeral will be held at 10:30 AM on SATURDAY, December 29 at the Doland United Methodist Church under the direction of Reverend Harold Loewen.  Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Huron.  Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 PM on FRIDAY, December 28 at Welter Funeral Home in Huron with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home or the Doland United Methodist Church Foundation.
