Donna Person, age 73, of Hutchinson, MN, formerly of Hitchcock, SD, died Thursday, September 19, 2013, at the Hutchinson Community Hospital after a brief struggle with cancer. Visitation with family present will be Friday morning, September 27, from 10:00 o'clock until 12:00 noon at Hitchcock United Methodist Church followed by burial at Altoona Cemetery in Hitchcock. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 28, at 1:00 p.m. at the Shalom Baptist Church in Hutchinson, MN. Memorial gifts can be sent to the Hutchinson Community Hospital or the Shalom Baptist Church in Hutchinson. Donna Person was born to Ferdinand "Yantie" and Esther (Hoelzel) Person on August 24, 1940, in Huron SD. She attended all 12 years at the Hitchcock schools and went on to college at Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell, SD, and later Southern State College in Madison, SD. She taught 2nd grade in Buffalo Lake, MN, for over 40 years. She retired from teaching in 2005 and volunteered her time working at her church. Donna loved reading, playing games and cards, gathering with her family and friends, and cooking up all kinds of special recipes. Donna hosted many baby and wedding showers and managed the cooking for the dinners which were held at her church, Shalom Church. She is survived by a brother, John and Janie (Gilchrist) Person of Watkins, CO; four nephews, Dan Person of Commerce City CO, Dave (Michelle) Person of Hudson, CO, Dane (Jennifer) Person of Jacksonville, NC, and Chris (Theresa) Person of Brookings, SD; three nieces, Susan (Dan) Person of Reunion, CO, Stephanie (Dan) Saunders of Colorado Springs, CO, and Angela Ritter of Brookings, SD; as well as 15 grand nieces and nephews. In addition to her family are Donna's "adopted" Hutchinson family: Kermit and Mary Schmalz of Hutchinson and their children, Nathan and (Fabiola) Schmalz and family, Peter Schmalz of Hutchinson, Matthew and (Nellissa Schmalz) of Hutchinson, Stephen and (Jennifer) Schmalz of Shakopee, MN, Daniel Schmalz of Kasota, MN, David and (Kayla) Schmalz of Rapid City, SD, and Abigail and (David) Moe of Duluth, MN, and 10 grandchildren. Also surviving her as part of Donna's Hutchinson family are Sarah Johnson and children. Donna was preceded in death by her infant twin brother, Donnie; her brother Loren; and her parents.
