Obituary

Donald O. Tibbetts Sr., age 96, formerly of Huron and the Cavour area, died Friday, November 24, 2006 at the Southridge Health Care Center at Sioux Falls. His funeral service will be at 1:00 PM Tuesday, November 28th at the Welter Funeral Home with Dr. Young Son officiating. Burial will be at LeSueur Cemetery at Bancroft. Friends may call Monday afternoon and evening or Tuesday until the time of service at the Welter Funeral Home with the family present Tuesday from 11:00 AM until the time of service. Donald Orin Tibbetts was born on April 10, 1910, to Clifford and Gertrude (Siedschlaw) Tibbetts at Willow Lake, SD. The family resided in Collins Township rural Clark County. He attended rural schools and the family moved to rural Bancroft in 1930. He helped on the family farm and also worked as a hired hand for rural farmers. On February 17, 1932, Donald married Ruth Clement of Hyde County, SD. After marrying he started farming in LeSueur Township of rural Bancroft. In the early 1940s he discontinued farming and started his own livestock trucking business along with working for Mobil Oil and Co-op of Bancroft until 1956. In 1956 he moved to Pierre and worked at the St. Charles Hotel. In 1962 the family moved to De Smet and purchased a grocery store known as Dons Grocery. Selling the business in 1965, they returned to Pierre where he worked for the State of South Dakota as a maintenance supervisor until 1979. He then moved to Cavour and operated a trailer court until he retired in 1988. After selling the trailer court business, he moved to Huron. Upon the death of Ruth his beloved wife of 58 years he resided at Sunquest Village, Huron, Courtyard Villa, Miller, Good Samaritan Center, De Smet and most recently Southridge Health Care Center, Sioux Falls. During his lifetime he loved to play baseball and enjoyed many years of hunting and fishing with family and friends. Every year he entertained a family hunting weekend. He rarely missed a basketball game where his sons were playing during their days of sports. The Tibbetts were always active sport fans when and if they were not participating. Donald served on the Bancroft School Board, LeSueur Township Board, LeSueur Cemetery Board, was a officer of the Cavour Senior Citizens, and Mayor of Cavour. He is survived by twins LaVaye (Lowell) Dubro of rural Iroquois and LaVerne (Twila) Tibbetts of Blue Earth, MN, daughter, Marjorie Tibbetts of De Smet, son, Donald (Brenda) Tibbetts of Sioux Falls, and daughter Charlene Danilko of Luverne, MN; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Leona (Art) Schroeder of Santee, CA; a brother, Forrest Tibbetts of Sioux Falls; a sister-in-law, Odella Tibbetts of Mesa, AZ and a brother-in-law, Theophil Kost of Huron; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth on February 20, 1990, an infant son Craig in 1946, a granddaughter Laurie Dubro in 1970, a son-in-law, Harvey Hoffer in 1989, a son-in-law, Ed Danilko in 2004, his parents, 2 brothers, Clinton and Glen Tibbetts, and 3 sisters Iona Kieser, Elaine Skyberg and Bernice Kost.
