Obituary

Donald McCaskell, age 86, of Huron, passed away on Tuesday, August 18, 2020 at Huron Regional Medical Center in Huron. His private burial service will be held on Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at Restlawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Huron. Memorial visitation will be from 4-6 PM on Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at Welter Funeral Home in Huron, with family present from 5-6 PM.

Don was born to Bernell and Vera (Johnson) McCaskell on April 13 th 1934 in DeSmet, South Dakota. Don spent the first 5 years of his life on the McCaskell farm, 8 miles NE of DeSmet. The next few years were spent on 3 different farms south of DeSmet. While in high school, he excelled in football, track and basketball. He graduated in 1952. Don attended college at SDSU. While in college, Don lettered and earned all-conference in track all four years. Don held the quarter mile record at 50.4 seconds for 30 plus years. He earned a masters in education, major in physical education and a minor in science. After graduating from SDSU, he entered the army for 2 years. After being discharged from the army, he came back to DeSmet, where he taught and coached for 9 years. He coached track for 2 years, assistant football coach for 7 years, head basketball coach for 7 years and the Athletic Director for 7 years.

Don married his lifelong classmate Janice Rousar on September 4 th 1954. From this marriage, Scott and Julie were born. The family moved to Huron in January of 1969.

In May of 1967, he entered the insurance business. Don was "Man of the Year" and had "Agency of the Year" numerous times. He retired in the early 2000's.

Don and Janice were inducted into the SD Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for Teen Town in DeSmet in April of 2016.

Don enjoyed hunting, land owning, playing pool, visiting with friends, taking trips, his grandchildren and driving around. Don was known to his family and friends as "drive around Don".

Don is survived by his son Scott and Jacque (Schmit) McCaskell, daughter Julie and Gary Zell, grandchildren Michael and Charlotte (Ramsell) Zell, Lindsey McCaskell (Alex Styer), Trevor and Becca (Goehner) McCaskell, step granddaughter Stephanie North, great grandchild Haelyn McCaskell, great step grandchildren Samantha, Kaleb, and Bryson.

Don is preceded in death by his wife Janice, his parents, brother Ron, infant sister, and nephew Phil McCaskell.

Memorials may be directed to the South Dakota Chapter Alzheimer's Association or Riverview United Methodist Church.
