Donald was born to Lawrence and Cecilia Hein on January 28, 1941 in Wessington Springs. He grew up rampaging around the countryside getting into as much trouble as he could.  Whether it be making spears and throwing them at neighbors cows or fishing in nearby ponds–he spent a lot of his childhood outside in the wilderness.

He spent four years serving his country in the United States Army.  He was stationed in Germany and was in charge of the shooting range.  Shortly after being honorably discharged, he met and fell in love with Donna Jans.  They were married on Aug 7th, 1962 at American Lutheran Church in Huron, SD.  The two of them had many happy years together.  They enjoyed their summer weekends camping and fishing.  The fall saw Donny spending his time outside hunting deer and pheasants.  They enjoyed traveling together around South Dakota to find the best fishing spots.

His life found him working in a variety of places. He worked at Kasperson Oil, Huron Dressed Beef, and spent the majority of his life at Terex.  He retired from Terex and found himself with too much time on his hands and went back to work at Premier Equipment (formally Olsen Implement).

He was an avid hunter and fisherman.  He instilled a love of the outdoors in both his children and grandchildren.  There was never a summer weekend without fishing or camping.

He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly (Dave) Mattke, his grandson, Tyler (Jamie Kleinsasser) Mattke, his granddaughter, Myranda (Schuyler) Holtrop, four great-grandsons, Cadence, Clayton, and Chance Mattke and Isaac Holtrop, all of Huron, a sister-in-law Dorthy Hein of Rapid City, a brother-in-law Charles Pieschke of Huron, his second wife, Denice Hein of Cavour, a grandson in Sioux Falls, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his wife Donna Hein, son Josh Hein, siblings Raymond Hein, Carol Bodiford, Arthur Hein, Peggy Durbin, Dixie Pieschke, Kenneth Hein, parents Lawrence and Cecelia Hein, and a nephew, Shawn Hein.
