Obituary

Donald Eugene Hampton, age 96, of Huron, SD, passed away on Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron. His funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2014 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron and military honors by Huron Veterans Council. Visitation with the family present will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, June 6, at Welter Funeral Home in Huron, with a prayer service to begin at 7:00 p.m. ; or visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Donald Eugene Hampton, the son of Gordon and Artie (Bendorf) Hampton, was born on March 11, 1918, on the family farm north of Huron, SD and attended country school. Donald served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged on October 23, 1945. Donald married Eunice Neitzert on September 21, 1946 in Nebraska. The couple lived on the family farm north of Huron for 57 years before moving to Huron in 2009. Donald was a farmer and a blacksmith for most of his life. He also worked as a mechanic for the Beadle County Highway Department for a time. Donald was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, and was very active in worship and Bible study. He was a member of VFW Forrest McMullen Post #1776. Donald enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved to play cards and win. Grateful for having shared in Donald's life are his wife, Eunice of Huron; six children: Jeanine (Gene) Harms of Sturgis, SD, Rodney (Linda) Hampton also of Sturgis, SD, Darrel (Sheila) Hampton of Wolsey, SD, Kevin (LuEllen) Hampton of Nisland, SD, Kent (Vickie) Hampton of Huron, SD and Annette (Steve) Bailey of Spearfish, SD; son-in-law, Kelley (Rhonda) Hoffmann of Axtell, NE; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews Donald was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Tammi Lavonne in 2001; brother, Lloyd Hampton; and six sisters, Belva Grady, Geneva Olerich, Verla Jones, Margaret Herriot, Doris McNutt, and Mildred Christman.
