Donald L. Engel, age 84, of Huron, died Monday, August 31, 2015 at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home. His funeral service will be at 10:30 am on Friday, September 4, 2015 at American Lutheran Church with burial and military honors by the Huron Veterans Council at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7 pm on Thursday at the Welter Funeral Home; or one hour prior to the service at the church. Don was born on February 11, 1931 in Canby, MN to Carl and Mabel (Winters) Engel. He graduated from Canby High School and attended the Intermountain School of Telegraphy in Salt Lake City, UT and Macalester College in St. Paul, MN to study mechanical engineering. Don entered the US Army on March 12, 1952 and served in Germany for the majority of his military service as a Morse Code Interpreter. He was honorably discharged on March 2, 1955 and moved back to South Dakota. On February 16, 1957, Don was united in marriage to Marlys DePauw in Sioux Falls. Don worked as a telegrapher for the Northern Pacific Railroad and later worked for Fuller Brush, Bankers Life and Casualty, Flanery's, and Don's Apco before purchasing Fair City Lanes/Bowler's Pro Shop where he worked for many years until his retirement in 2007. Don enjoyed bowling and spending time outside enjoying fishing, camping, horseshoes, gardening, and working in the yard. He was an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves, and Golden Gophers and cherished spending time with his family. Don was a member of the United States Bowling Congress (USBC), Life Member of the Huron USBC, 1987 charter inductee to the SD Bowling Hall of Fame for Bowling Ability, 2001 SD Bowling Association Proprietor of the Year, and 2013 SD Bowling Association Bowling Family of the Year. In 1974, Don served as President of the Huron Bowling Association and was the second person ever to roll a 300 game in Huron. Don bowled five 300 games during his bowling career, many of which happened around special family events. He was a multi-year city tournament scratch all events champion, 1997 city tournament singles champion, and two time city tournament team champion. Don is survived by his son, Bruce Engel of Huron; 2 daughters, ReVay (LeRon) DeVries of Corsica, SD and Julie (Dave) Johnson of Huron; 1 brother, Darrell (Bill) Engel of Dassel, MN; 7 grandchildren, Jennifer (Bryce) Pietzyk, Derek (Seneca Lovett)Engel , Toni (Ross) King, Teresa (Davis) Vanden Berge, Toby (Whitney) DeVries, Brandi (Keith) Fitzgerald, and Bo Johnson; 13 great grandchildren, Anissa and Kyler Pietzyk, Eliem and Acey Engel, Alivia, Marlie, and Gavin King, Madison Vanden Berge, Maddox, Jackson, and Emerson DeVries, and Cora and Kinley Fitzgerald, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marlys Engel in 2007, 1 sister, Margaret Paulson, 1 sister-in-law, Joyce Engel, 1 brother-in-law, Henry Paulson, and 1 great-grand-daughter, AvaLee DeVries. In honor of Don's life and love of bowling, bowling attire is welcome.
