Donald K. Benston, age 84, of 1345 Michigan Ave SW, Huron, died Saturday, October 4, 2008 at the SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron.
His Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church in Huron with burial at Riverside Cemetery and Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council.
The family will be present to greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Welter Funeral Home, or one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
Donald K. Bentson, the son of Gyrth and Hazel (Duesler) Benston was born on January 20, 1924 in Huron, South Dakota. He graduated from Cavour High School, where he played on the basketball team as a star forward and helped the team win many tournaments. Don served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, and Don took part in the invasion of Normandy, France, he was honorably discharged. Don married Verna Mae Larsen on March 30, 1947 in Huron, South Dakota. Don was a livestock buyer for the Armour Meatpacking Company for many years. He also worked for the Cobbie-Magness Livestock Company.
Don was a member of the First United Methodist Church for many years. He was also a member of the William Reaves American Legion Post #7 and the Forrest McMullen VFW Post #1776. He enjoyed pontooning, fishing, and spending time with his family and friends at his cabin on Lake Byron.
Grateful for having shared his life are his son, Larry Benston, formerly of Mesa, AZ; his two daughters, Rhonda (Kenneth) Benston-Showman of Mesa, Arizona, and Debra Benston of Huron, South Dakota; three grandchildren, Danielle, Barry, and Kristopher; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces .
Don was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Verna Mae in 1967; and his two brothers, Duane and Bill Benston.
