Dick LaVern Biel was born September 7, 1950, in Mobridge, SD, to Virgil L. and Delila (Aman) Biel. He was baptized and confirmed as a teenager at United Congregational Church in Java. Dick attended Bertsch Country School where he learned to read with Dick, Jane and Sally, along with Spot and Puff, their furry friends! The most important thing Dick learned was to put up the American Flag and say the Pledge of Allegiance every morning before school started. Every day when school was over, they took down Old Glory and folded her, never letting her touch the ground. When the country school dissolved, he moved to the Java public grade school, and graduated from Java High School in 1969. Following graduation Dick worked for H.C. Clark Implement in Aberdeen, SD, while continuing his education at the Aberdeen School of Commerce, graduating in 1972 with a business degree. After graduation, Dick returned home to farm with his father, Virgil and brother, Todd. In 1976, Dick moved to Huron, SD and started his working career. It was also at this time that he met his future wife at the Dairy Queen!
On June 16, 1979 he was united in marriage to Pamela Dick in Huron, SD. Dick & Pam moved Sioux City, IA, where Dick worked for Lissco Systems until they returned to Huron in 1981. This is where they welcomed and raised their sons, Jacob and Josh. From 1985-2010 Dick held various sales and territorial management positions with MoorMan Feed, Olsen Implement, Flexicoil, New Holland and Titan Farm Machinery, until retiring in 2010.
Riding his motorcycle, waterskiing, camping, hunting and fishing with friends and family were some of his favorite memories. Dick loved working on his Crosley pickup, M&M tractors, and was able to compete in his first tractor pull in July 2023. He enjoyed solving problems of all kinds, no matter what the challenge. Dick was active in his church, serving as Sunday School teacher, deacon, elder, served on the pastor search committee and sang in the church choir. He also served as a scout leader when his boys were active in boy scouts. During retirement Dick could be found having coffee with men he worked with and considered to be his very dear friends.
Dick is survived by his wife of 45 years, Pamela, sons Jacob (Mandy Miedema), and Josh (Kortne Picek), grandchildren, Megan, Thomas, Presley, Laiken and Brinkley, brother Todd (Deb) Biel, sister Roberta (Doug) Eisenbeisz, and mother, Delila Biel, brother-in-law, Glenn (Karen) Dick, many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, father Virgil in 2006, father-in-law, Harvey in 2003, mother-in-law, Gladys, in April of 2023, brother-in-law, Michael, in 2013, and sister-in-law, Charlotte in May of 2024.
