Dennis G. Harkness, age 69, of Huron, passed away on Thursday, August 01, 2019 at his home in Huron, after a brief battle with cancer. His funeral service will be on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at 1:30 PM at Welter Funeral Home in Huron. Visitation with his family present will be on Friday, August 9, 2019 from 5-7 PM at Welter Funeral Home; or one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
Dennis Guy Harkness was born on November 10, 1949 to parents Guy and Lucille (Knecht) Harkness in Akron, Iowa. He attended grade school at a country school in Union County, South Dakota and graduated from high school in Akron, Iowa. Dennis married Peggy Hoffmann in Miller, SD on May 24, 1980.
Dennis worked as a property and restaurant manager for many years. His last and most favorite job was as a driver for People's Transit. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his family and friends. He cheered on the Minnesota Twins, Vikings and Nebraska Cornhuskers. Nothing made him prouder than to watch his grandkids play sports.
Dennis is survived by his wife Peggy of Huron; children Denyce (Wade) Campbell of Arlington, SD and Kevin (Monica) Harkness of La Crosse, WI; four grandchildren, Vashti Mejia, Amber Boden, Brody Harkness and Claudia Campbell; two great granddaughters, Geneviev Mejia and Baby Girl Harkness, on the way. Brothers, Dale (Carolyn) Harkness of Elk Point, Dallas Harkness of Sioux Falls, Dean Harkness of Yankton, and sister Joanne Marshall of Menomonie, WI. Brother-in-law John (Shelly) Hoffmann of Wessington and sister-in-law Barb (Roger) Haberling of Miller; mother-in-law Dee Buckland of Huron as well as several nieces and nephews.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Ray Henke and Danny Harkness.
Family encourages friends and family to wear hunting, Twins, Vikings and Cornhusker attire to celebrate Dennis' life.
