Delores Cleveland, age 77, of 50 7th St. SE, Huron, SD, formerly of the Cavour / Iroquois area, died Tuesday, August 18, 2009, at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home.
Her funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 24, at Riverview United Methodist Church in Huron with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation will be Sunday from 1-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 6-8 p.m. and a Prayer Service at 7 p.m.; or Monday afternoon one hour prior to the service at the church.
Delores Elaine Winegarden, daughter of Harris and Mable (Housner) Winegarden, was born on June 15, 1932, in Wessington Springs, SD. She grew up in Wessington Springs where she attended school. After completion of her formal education, Delores worked at St. Johns Hospital in Huron and then attended school in Sioux City, IA.
On July 24, 1955, Delores married Harlan Cleveland in Huron. They lived and owned a variety of farms in the area all of their married lives. In addition to the farm work, Delores was a bus driver for the Iroquois Public School System for 20 years starting the early 1970s. She also worked for the Puppet Factory in Huron for several years. For a period of time, Delores also sold Avon products.
Delores and Harlan wintered in Arizona for 12 years, primarily in the towns of Morristown and Salome. Harlan died on August 29, 2006.
She was a member of Esmond United Methodist Church; Bensley-Rounds American Legion Post #280 Auxiliary of Iroquois; UCT: and the Moose Lodge.
Delores loved her family dearly and always enjoyed the time she could spend with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and visiting with her many friends. In addition, her many interests included fishing, camping, crocheting, sewing, photography, dancing especially square dancing, playing cards, Bingo, and the marble game. She also did extensive research of the genealogy of both her family and Harlans. Many years ago, Delores and Harlan started the first Cleveland family reunion, which is still going strong today.
Delores has been a resident of SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron since February 8, 2008.
She is survived by 3 daughters, Barb (Dale) Reilly of Iroquois, SD, Sandra (Fred) Ehrk of Wolsey, SD, and Karen (Kevin) Nelson of San Diego, CA; 1 foster daughter, Jayne (Rick) Eaton of Hastings, MI; 1 daughter-in-law, Margaret Maggie Cleveland of Wessington Springs, SD; 16 grandchildren, Jody Wood, Melissa Zerebeckyj, Francie (Jonathan) Friesen, Rob (Dez) Cleveland, David (Brandi) Cleveland, Wade Klousek, Travis (Nicole) Reilly, Shannon (Scott) Johnson, Crystal Reilly, Adam Ehrk, Amber Ehrk, Ashley Ehrk, Katelyn Nelson, Krista Nelson, Danyelle Eaton, and Jerryd Eaton; 8 great grandchildren, Tyler Wood, Akira Cleveland, Mason Cleveland, Cody Friesen, Emma Friesen, BreeAnn Friesen, Robert James RJ Cleveland; and Mikayla Reilly; 2 sisters, Beulah Mettler of Renton, WA, and Cora Voorhees of Sea Tac, WA; 1 sister-in-law, Anita Winegarden of Plymouth, MN; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harlan; 1 son, Robert Cleveland; 3 sisters, Ada Peck, Verla Mettler, and Rose Mettler; 3 brothers, Vernon Winegarden, LeRoy Winegarden, and Robert Winegarden; 5 brothers-in-law, Harry Peck, Leonard Mettler, Adolph Mettler, Otto Mettler, and Harold Voorhees; 2 sisters-in-law, Thea Winegarden, and Esther Winegarden.
