Delia Washabaugh, age 97, of Arlington, SD, and formerly of Huron, died Sunday, July 24, 2005, at the Beverly Healthcare Center at Arlington. Her funeral service will be at 2:00 PM Friday, July 29, at the Welter Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Hoffmann officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday afternoon and evening and Friday until time of service at the Welter Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the Arlington United Methodist Church. Delia Washabaugh was born Delia Quale on August 21, 1907, to George and Delia (Secora) Quale at Huron. She attended Huron public schools and graduated from Huron High School in 1926. On June 18, 1933, Delia married Percy Washabaugh at the Huron Presbyterian Church. From 1926, she was employed by the C&NW Railroad as a secretary in the accounting department. The couple moved frequently as her husband changed teaching positions and Delia always found secretarial positions: with the U.S. Employment Bureau in Huron; U.S. Corps of Engineers at Cody, WY, during the Japanese Relation; secretary to Colonel Jacobs at Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver; 7 years as secretary to the San Dieguito High School Superintendent, and Clerk of the School Board at Encinitas, CA; 2 years at the Santa Monica YWCA; and 5 years for the Decor Door Company of Venice, CA. In 1971, the couple returned to South Dakota living at Lake Poinsett for 10 years, moving to Arlington in 1982. She became a resident of the Beverly Healthcare Center at Arlington in June of 1997. While living in Huron, Delia and her friend, Flossie Larsen, were responsible for organizing the Order of Jobs Daughters. Their first practice session on December 7, 1941, however, was interrupted by the announcement that the Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbor. Delia was a member of the Arlington Methodist Church, in 1986 a 60-year member of Mizpah Chapter #9 Order of the Eastern Star in Huron, and in 1986 a 50-year member of Rebekah Lodge #44 of Huron. Delia and Percy enjoyed traveling, class reunions, and visiting. In the last few years, she enjoyed the games at the Healthcare Center, looking at pictures, crocheting, and keeping up with the news of Huron from the newspaper. Delia is survived by her adopted family, Mark and Lydia Giziewski of Yankton, Tara and Terry Bush and family of Bellevue, NE, Clint and Amy Bultsma and family of Plankinton, and Scott and Mindy Giziewski and family of Sioux City, IA. She is also survived by 2 cousins, Paul Giziewski of Wagner, and Mrs. Alyce (Bernie) Howard of Huron. She was preceded in death by her husband, Percy on June 30, 1996; 1 brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Christine Quale.
