Obituary

Delbert "Dick" Schley, age 67, of Farmington, MN, formerly of the Huron area, died Friday, May 17, 2013, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, IA. His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 24, at Welter Funeral Home with burial at Maplewood Cemetery in Iroquois with military honors by American Legion Bensley-Rounds Post #280 of Iroquois. Visitation with family present will be Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home; or Friday morning one hour prior to the service. Delbert Lee Schley, son of Marvin and Lucille (Bensley) Schley, was born on May 19, 1945, in Iroquois, SD. He grew up in many towns in South Dakota, attending high school in Alpena. He worked on the family farm in addition to working construction. Delbert enlisted in the U.S. Navy on December 9, 1965. While in the service he completed his high school education receiving his GED. He served in the Vietnam War Theater aboard the aircraft carrier USS Constellation. On October 31, 1969, he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy. On April 5, 1969, Delbert married Judeen Kopfmann at the American Lutheran Church in Huron. Following his discharge from the service he returned to Alpena and drove truck for Glen Denning Trucking from 1970-1971. The couple then moved to Omaha, NE, where Delbert drove truck for American Freight until 1988. He moved to Farmington, MN, and drove truck for Roadway Freight. He retired in 2003 after 43 years in trucking. His many interests included old machinery-cars-tractors and a love for motorcycles. He enjoyed playing checkers and cards, fishing, hunting, NASCAR, and his faithful dog, Cheyenne. He is survived by 4 children, Kimberly (Joe) Beran of Grand Island, NE, Paul (Lynette) Wold of Yankton, Bonnie (Brian) Brodersen of Denison, IA, and Robbie (Alecia) Schley of Alpena; 8 grandchildren, Justin Gill, Ryan Gill, Alex Wold, Ben Wold, Garrett Schley, Tayla Brodersen, Makenzie Schley, and Kobie Schley; 2 sisters, Donna (Lloyd) Knouse of Huron, and Marilyn Jensen of De Smet; 1 brother, Duane (Burdean) Schley of Keystone, SD; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and 1 sister, Phyllis Schley.
