Obituary

Deanna Kooyman, age 78, of Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of Huron, SD, passed away on Sunday January 27, 2019 at Ava's House in Sioux Falls, SD.

Her memorial service is at 11:00 AM, on Saturday, April 20 at First United Methodist Church in Huron with burial in the Restlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Deanna Erickson, the daughter of Phillip and Doris (Flood) Erickson, was born on January 1, 1941 in Huron.  She graduated from Huron High School in 1958. Deanna loved spending her summers swimming and her winters ice skating at Ravine Lake. Music was very important to Deanna. She played the clarinet and saxophone and was the head majorette in the marching band. She also excelled at dance, winning state competitions with her partner, Bob Timm.

Deanna attended Stewart's School of Hairstyling, graduating in 1960. She later attended Northwest College of Commerce, graduating in 1974.

Deanna married Harold Kooyman in 1961 in Huron; to this union were born four sons Gregory, Robert, Steven and Clark. Deanna and Harold lived in Pierre, Washington D.C., and Rapid City. Deanna moved home to Huron in 1972 following her divorce.

Deanna worked for Bell Telephone from 1958-1960, a nurse's aide from 1972 to 1978 and then as a home health care aide from 1978 to 2000. She also worked as a housekeeper at the Crossroads until 2003.

Deanna was a member of First United Methodist Church in Huron where she was part of the choir, circle and the Sunshine Squad. Deanna had many hobbies she enjoyed, crocheting, knitting, macramé, along with making each son an afghan.

Grateful for having shared in Deanna's life are her four sons: Greg Kooyman of Spring Valley, CA, Robert Kooyman of Springdale, AR, Steven (Joanne) Kooyman of Chandler, AZ, and Clark (Melissa Felvus) Kooyman of Sioux Falls; 8 grandchildren Christina (Ryan) Potfay, Jonathan Kooyman, Christopher (Kelli) Kooyman, Brittany Kooyman, Jayden Kooyman, Danielle Kooyman, Zachary Kooyman, and Kendra Kooyman; 6 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marilyn (Roger) Bauer of Billings, MT and Shelley (J.D.) Noonan of Huron.

Deanna was preceded in death by her parents, brother Richard Erickson and sister Marsha DeVries.
