Obituary

Dean Phillips, age 89, of Huron, SD, and formerly of rural Wolsey, died Friday, December 25, 2009, at his daughters home (Mary Belle) in rural Wolsey.

His funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 30, at Welter Funeral Home with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery and Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 1-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 6-8 p.m.; or Wednesday afternoon one hour prior to the service.

Dean Edward Phillips, son of John M. and Emma (Voorhees) Phillips, was born on April 18, 1920, in rural Hitchcock, SD. He graduated from Bonilla High School in 1939. He then worked for various farmers in Minnesota.

On March 23, 1942, Dean entered the U.S. navy during World War II. He was honorably discharged on December 10, 1945. He returned to Bonilla and farmed in the area.

On July 30, 1949, Dean married Mary Ellen Zybell in Huron. They continued on the farm until retirement in 1982, at which time they moved to Huron. After the death of his wife, Mary Ellen, in 1997, Dean moved to an acreage west of Huron.

Dean enjoyed anything that involved horses, and collecting old farm machinery. He loved the time that he could spend with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a member of the Paul A. Schleher VFW Post #2755 of Redfield; William Reaves American Legion Post #7 of Huron; and the Huron Area Antique Power Association.

He is survived by 3 daughters, Mary Belle (Gene) Marone of Wolsey, Marsha (Lannie) Pullman of Wolsey, and Corinne (Mick) Clouser of Wolsey; 4 grandchildren, Jennifer (Matt) Hazzard, April (Ben) Wirth, Brent (Amy) Clouser, and Dennis (Mandy) Marone; 5 great grandchildren, Michael Wirth, Benjamin Wirth, Carly Wirth. Logan Hazzard, and Addison Marone; 2 sisters-in-law, Delpha Phillips of Rapid City, SD, and Philles Phillips of Bagley, MN; 1 brother-in-law, Dean Dawson of Enumclaw, WA; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Ellen on April 26, 1997; 2 brothers, George, and John, Jr.; and 1 sister, Gloria Dawson.
