Dean McGillvrey, age 82, of Huron, SD, died Saturday, May 24, 2014, at SunQuest Healthcare Center. His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 31, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with burial at St. Martin Cemetery with military honors. Visitation with family present will be Friday, May 30, from 5-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with a scripture and rosary service at 7:00 p.m.; or Saturday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Dean Roger McGillvrey, son of Laurn and Lorine (Christopherson) McGillvrey, was born on March 15, 1932, in Wolsey, SD. He attended Weeks Country School north of Wolsey from 1st-8th grade and graduated from Wolsey High School in 1950. On November 7, 1950, Dean entered the U.S. Navy and served as an aviation machinist during the Korean War. He was assigned to Navy bases in California, Hawaii, and Japan. His Navy schools were located in Memphis, TN, and Jacksonville, FL. He was honorably discharged on September 14, 1954. He returned to Wolsey and attended Huron College. On September 25, 1955, Dean married Donna Gleason in Huron. In 1959 they moved to Conde, SD, and returned to Wolsey in 1964. They lived there until moving into Huron in 2009. Dean was a district superintendent for NWPS (NorthWestern Public Service) from 1955-77. In 1973 Dean entered the petroleum business with Dean's Standard Service and started the operation of the McGillvrey Oil Company in 1982. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, Lions Club, volunteer firefighter, American Legion, VFW, and 40 et 8, and Rovers Camping Club. His passion for music included singing, playing guitar and the mouth-organ. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, and playing cards with family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Donna of Huron; 5 children, James (Caroline) McGillvrey of Wolsey and their 8 children and 7 grandchildren: Adam (Christie) McGillvrey with Landon & Emmersyn; Doug (Erika) McGillvrey with Tucker & Blake; Brad McGillvrey; Kelli McGillvrey; David (Karen) Jensen with Ryder & Preslie; Theresa Jensen; Katie (Eric) Decker with Madison; Daniel Jensen. Allen (Terri) McGillvrey of Gordon, WI, and their 3 children and 3 grandchildren: Chris Hastings with Emmalyn & Finnigan; Patrick McGillvrey; Nichole (Brandon) Veches with Fiona. Lori (Doug) Langbehn of Peachtree City, GA, and their 3 children and 2 grandchildren: Emily (BJ) Sellers with Nora & Alice; Jason Langbehn; Casey Langbehn. Richard (Sherry) McGillvrey of Wolsey and their 3 children and 7 grandchildren: Megan (Cody) Kleinsasser with Jett; Ashley (Eric) Hiles with Alyssa, Hannah, Clayton, & Haylee; Josh (Jaime) McGillvrey with Trey and Kai. Robert (Penny) McGillvrey of Wolsey and their 3 children and 1 grandchild: Josh (Bridgett) McGillvrey with GraceLynn; Alex McGillvrey; Lexi McGillvrey. He is also survived by 2 sisters, Jacqueline (Ray) Jager of Huron, and Marjorie (Max) VanDenBerg of Meridian, ID; and 3 brothers-in-law, Robert Marshall of Arnold, MD, Larry Gleason of Mandeville, LA, and Donald Schaefers of Rapid City, SD. Dean was preceded in death by his parents; and 1 sister, JoAnne Marshall.
