Oct 28, 1943 — Aug 17, 2026
Huron
Daryl Wasmund, age 82, of Huron, passed away on Monday, August 17, 2026 at Avantara in Huron. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, August 21, 2026 at Welter Funeral Home in Huron, SD. Visitation, with his family present, will be from 5-7 p.m., on Thursday, August 20, 2026 at Welter Funeral Home. A time of sharing will be held at 6:30 p.m.
Daryl G. Wasmund was born on October 28, 1943, in Worthington, MN, the son of Sievert and Viola (Winter) Wasmund. He was raised on a farm in the Dundee, MN, area and went to a country school there before later moving to a farm near Bigelow, MN. Growing up around Bigelow, he was always excited to get his chores done on Saturday so he could play pool at the pool hall on Sunday.
He was united in marriage to Carolyn K. Wasmund on April 28, 1962, in Sibley, IA. He worked for many years at the elevator in Bigelow, for the City of Bigelow, and later at the packing house, Armours, in Worthington, MN.
In 1979, he bought Merry Lanes/Alley 7 in Sibley, IA, where they later resided. Daryl, along with his son Breck, thrived in the bowling business for many years. In 1994, along with his other son Michael, he purchased the Plains in Huron, SD. Along the way, he had several bowling accomplishments, including serving as president of the Bowlers Association of Iowa, leading the small bowling center, and participating in running the women’s pro bowling tournaments. In addition, he gave many speeches, including one in Hawaii, and traveled the country speaking at seminars.
In his free time, he enjoyed golfing and spending time with his children and grandchildren. There are so many memories we will all cherish, especially the precious time spent at the cabin on Lake Byron and the many moments shared together in Sibley.
He is survived by three children: two sons, Breck (Karen) Wasmund of Sibley, IA, and Michael Wasmund of Huron, SD; and a daughter, Jennifer Kruger of Waukee, IA. He is also survived by daughters-in-law Patricia Evenson of Red Wing, MN, daughters-in-law Beth Kreykes of Sibley, IA and son-in-law Shaun Kruger of West Liberty, IA; seven grandchildren, Abby (Brett) Coufal, Ally (Brian) Jensen, Lindsey (Kyle) DeDecker, Jacob (Natlija) Kruger, Alexa (Andrew) Schaffhausen, Alyssa (Drew) Levan, and Chase Wasmund; many great-grandchildren; one brother, Bob; and three sisters, Kathy, Connie, and Jeannette.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Wasmund; his parents, Sievert and Viola Wasmund; two infants, Terry and Jerry Wasmund; and a sister, Ellen.
