Darwin J. Smith, age 36, of 1109 Illinois Ave SW, Huron, died Thursday, August 4, 2005, north of Yale as the result of an accident. His funeral Mass will be at 10:00 AM Tuesday, August 9, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father Joe Holzhauser officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 9th at the Erwin Cemetery at Erwin, SD, with Military Rites by the Hartland American Legion Post #241. Friends may call Monday afternoon from 1:00 to 5:00 PM at the Welter Funeral Home and from 6:00 to 9:00 PM Monday evening at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with a Scripture Service at 7:00 PM, or prior to the Mass Tuesday morning at the church. Darwin John Smith was born on October 21, 1968 to Donald and Charlotte (Olson) Smith in Lake Preston, SD. Darwin attended and graduated from Lake Preston High School in 1986. After graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country during Desert Storm and the Yellowstone National Park fires. After his honorable discharge, he worked with his father at Smith Body Shop in Lake Preston. He then attended Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown, SD and received an Associates Degree in Diesel Technology. Darwin worked at James River Equipment in Huron, and was employed by Beadle County Highway Department at the time of his death. Darwin married his beloved wife, Lynne Carlson on November 9, 1991. This union blessed them with 6 children; Danielle 13, Courtney 11, Rachel 7, Juliana 5, Ryan 3, and Angela 4 months old, all of Huron. Darwin loved his God and his family. He enjoyed watching his children grow and learn through activities such as swim team, cross country, shooting sports, and camping, His family and friends meant the world to him. Other hobbies included NASCAR racing, golfing, bowling, hunting and many others. His friends were innumerable, and his willingness to help all around him was a testimony to how he lived his life. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Huron and the Hartland American Legion Post #241 of Erwin, SD. He is survived by his wife and best friend Lynne and six beautiful children all of Huron; parents Don and Charlotte Smith of Lake Preston; three brothers, Edwin (Sandy) Smith of Nevada City, CA, Delwin (Mary) Smith of Lake Preston, SD, and Ronald (Michele) Smith of Brookings, SD; six sisters, Kathleen (Jeff) Speer of Grass Valley, CA, Joyce (Ron) Fried of Kodiak, AK, Nancy (John) Anderson of Kodiak, AK, Donna Phelps of Hermosa, SD, Velva (Harvey) Fitzgerald of Hermosa, SD and Charlene (Dennis) Stein of Clear Lake, SD; his father and mother-in-law, David and Joyce (Dunn) Carlson of Erwin, SD; brothers-in-law, Keith Carlson of Erwin, SD, Steve (Penny) Carlson of Erwin, SD, Joey (Suzanne) Carlson of Sioux Falls, SD and Andy Carlson of Brookings. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Eddie and Esther Smith and John and Teressa Olson, and a sister, Mary Smith. A memorial scholarship fund for the children has been established at the Dakotaland Federal Credit Union in Huron.
