Darrell Higgins, age 69, of Alpena, died Saturday, April 2, 2005 at the Sioux Valley Hospital at Sioux Falls. His funeral Mass will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday, April 5th at St. Wilfrids Catholic Church in Woonsocket with Father John Maliyekal and Father Gerald Thury officiating. Burial will be at St. Wilfrids Cemetery. Friends may call Monday afternoon until 5:00 PM at the Welter Funeral Home and from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Monday evening at St. Wilfrids Catholic Church or prior to the Mass at the church Tuesday morning. There will be a Scripture Service at 7:00 PM Monday evening at St. Wilfrids Catholic Church at Woonsocket. Darrell Leo Higgins was born on April 19, 1935, to Leo and Gladys (Roti) Higgins at Alpena, SD. He was raised in Alpena and attended rural school and graduated from Alpena High School. On June 7, 1958, Darrell married LeElda Christensen. He served in the United States Army from August 1958 to his honorable discharge in May 1960. He farmed in the Alpena area until the late 1970s. He was employed at Jensen Grain driving truck for 13 years. He was employed at the Alpena School as a custodian until he retired in 2001. He drove school bus for many years for Alpena and Wessington Springs up until his death. He was a member of St. Wilfrids Catholic Church in Woonsocket, a member of the Eudes Council #1525 Knights of Columbus and he served on the Alpena School board. He is survived by his wife LeElda of Alpena; one son, Darnell of Alpena; three daughters, ReAnn (Mike) Knust of White, Kim Higgins of Hopkins, MN and Twila (Greg) Vavra of Wessington Springs; three grandchildren, Teresa Knust and a special friend Jason Landmark, Jim Vavra and Dan Knust; one great-granddaughter, Bailey Landmark; five sisters, Myrna (Charlie) Knigge of Woonsocket, Marlene (Pat) Howard of Woonsocket, Jan (Ducky) Stange of Woonsocket, Illene Breakie of Delaware, and Diane (Skip) Larson of Woonsocket; one brother, Duane (Pat) Higgins of Inver Grove Heights, MN; his mother-in-law, Loretta Christensen of Huron; two sisters-in-law, WyAnn (Deany) Tebay of Alpena and DeAnn Christensen of Huron; special friends, Madonna Gamble and Jack Peck and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law, one sister-in-law, one brother-in-law, two nephews, one great niece and one great nephew. Casket bearers will be Gary Orth, Monte Kopfmann, Ronnie Kopfmann, Rick Tebay, Chris Larson and Jeff Howard.
