Darlene Martin, age 89, of 156 5th St. NE, Huron, SD, died Monday, May 11, 2009, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
Her funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 14, at First United Methodist Church with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 1-8 p.m. at Welter Funeral Home with family present from 6-8 p.m.; or Thursday morning one hour prior to the service at the church.
Darlene Martin was born Darlene Erna Lyle on February 24, 1920, to Dean and Elva (Miller) Lyle in Marshall, MN. As a young girl she moved with her family to Huron where she grew up, attended school, and graduated from Huron High School in 1938.
On August 28, 1940, Darlene married Edward Martin in Lansing, MI. The couple moved to Huron where she was employed at the Marvin Hughitt Hotel in Huron for many years as a bookkeeper and hostess; and Huron Drilling as a bookkeeper for 13 years prior to her retirement in 1981.
Darlene was a member of First United Methodist Church, past president and 41-year member of the William Reaves American Legion Post #7 Auxiliary, and a 58-year member of 8 et 40.
She is survived by 2 sons, Michael (Cassi) Martin of Aiken, SC, and Terry (Ines) Martin of San Antonio, TX; 1 daughter, Suzanne Bomar of Huron; 5 grandchildren, Kelli (Jay) Hubner, Amy Martin, Lilane (Joseph) Riefenberg, Sarah (Spencer) White, and Edward (Jeannette) Martin; 5 great grandchildren, Jacob Hubner, KeAnna Hubner, Lily Riefenberg, Laci Riefenberg, and Laura Beth White; several nieces and nephews; and her canine baby Maggie May.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward, on March 13, 1992; 3 brothers and their spouses, Donald (Maxine) Lyle, Wayne (Maxine) Lyle, and Keith (Betty) Lyle.
