Darel Peterson, 65, of Huron died Thursday, August 25, 2016 at his home.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 30, at 11:00am at the First Presbyterian Church in Huron, followed by interment at the Bonilla Cemetery.  Visitation will be held at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron on Monday, August 29 from 5:00-7:00pm, with a Prayer Service held at 7:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Presbyterian Church Scholarship Funds.

Darel was born on March 25, 1951, in Huron, to Elwood and LuVerne (Tollefson) Peterson.  He was raised in Bonilla, and graduated from Tulare High School in 1969.  He graduated from Huron College in 1973 with a teaching degree.

He taught and coached sports in Conde, SD for 3 years before moving to Huron.  He taught math in the Huron School System for over 30 years, and coached track, basketball and football.  After retiring from teaching, he managed the Huron Area Education Federal Credit Union.

He enjoyed singing in the Huron Presbyterian Church choir and with the Aberdeen Men's Chorus.  His passions were fishing even though he couldn't catch anything, hunting even though he was a bad shot, and camping even though he burned his marshmallows.  He was an animal lover and could usually be found in the presence of his dogs.  When traveling, other pet owners often found themselves being abandoned for him.

On weekends, he could be found at the local race tracks, supporting his son's race team and leading the pit crew.

He is preceded in death by his parents and infant brother.  He is survived by his wife, Barb (Bonesteel) of Huron; his daughter Cherine (Eric) Smith of Draper, UT; son Cris (Jamie) of Huron, SD; son Chaun (Nickie) of Mina, SD; grandchildren Jayda Peterson of Huron, Cully and Aissa Peterson of Mina, SD; sister Darla (Doug) Roeber of Maryville, TN; a niece and two nephews and their families.
