Obituary

Dale Wickherst, age 80, of 1006 Montana Ave. SW, Huron, SD, died Saturday, February 17, 2007, at his home. His memorial service will be at 1:00 PM Saturday, March 3rd, at the Elks Club in Huron with Rev. Kenneth Wickherst officiating. Dale Duane Wickherst was born on September 4, 1926, to Clarence and Hazel (Miner) Wickherst on the family farm north of Wessington, SD, in Hand County. He attended country school through the eighth grade. He remained and worked on the family farm until he entered the U.S. Army on April 10, 1945, during World War II. He served as part of the American Occupation Forces in Japan following the end of the war. He was honorably discharged on November 23, 1946. He returned to Huron where he worked for the railroad for a number of years. On May 2, 1953, Dale married Darlene McIlravy at Huron. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Wessington, SD, where they owned and operated the Wickherst Hardware Store. They sold the store in 1973 and moved to Huron. Dale then worked for Dress Beef until his retirement in 1986. In 1990, Darlene and Dale began wintering in Yuma, AZ. He was a member of the Huron Baptist Church, Forrest McMullen VFW Post #1776 of Huron, and the National Experimental Aircraft Association. His many interests included airplanes both real and radio-controlled, Volkswagen cars, collecting rocks and arrowheads, freehand painting, and other wood and metal crafts. He is survived by 2 sons, Charles Wickherst of Spokane, WA, and Dale Wickherst, Jr. of Huron; 3 daughters, Christle Wickherst of Portland, OR, Charlene Marvel of Huron, and Joan (Larry) McBride of Huron; 13 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Kenneth (Margaret) Wickherst of Watertown, SD, and Elwood (Shirley) Wickherst of Minneapolis, MN; and 2 sisters-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Darlene on February 27, 2002; 2 brothers, Harry Wickherst, and Don Wickherst; and 2 sons-in-law, James Marvel, and Lee Quiram.
