Dale L. Sattgast went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 1, 2025. He was born in Payette, Idaho on July 12, 1949 to Herman and Dorothy Sattgast. He became a child of God and a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod when he was baptized on August 28, 1949. He grew up and worked hard on the family dairy farm near New Plymouth, Idaho. He joined the United States Navy right after high school graduation and after specialized training, became the youngest air traffic controller serving at that time. He served for 4 years active duty on Guam and Whidbey Island, Washington plus one year of reserve duty.
After military services, he earned an Associate of Arts degree at Concordia College in Portland, Oregon, a Bachelor of Arts at Concordia Senior College in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and a Masters of Divinity at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. He vicared in Flint, Michigan. His first Call was to the dual parish of Canistota and Montrose, South Dakota where he was ordained in 1980. He then accepted a Call to a mission congregation in Albuquerque, New Mexico and served there from 1984 to 1987. He accepted a Call back to South Dakota, to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron, where he served as the Senior Pastor for 19 years. In 2006, he was elected to serve as the District President for South Dakota, and he continued as a faithful shepherd in that role for the next 9 years. During that time, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Concordia University in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was also on the Commission on the Handbook for the Synod for many years. After retiring, he continued to assist where needed in multiple congregations. Throughout his life, Dale was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, camping and gardening.
While at Concordia College he met Deborah Heins, and they were married in 1974.
Pastor Sattgast is survived by his wife of Huron; their children, Rachel (Robert) Lail of Spokane, WA, Mark (Amanda) Sattgast of West Lafayette, IN, and Joel (Laura) Sattgast of Spokane, WA; and 8 grandchildren. He is also survived by three older sisters, Vera, Verna, and Donna (Bill), and his younger brother, John (Debbie) and his sisters-and brothers-in-law, Claudia, Steven (Eileen), Joanne (David) and Susan, in addition to many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family prefers memorials rather than flowers. Those given to the family will be designated for a scholarship in Pastor Sattgast's memory for Concordia Seminary or a Concordia University.
